Where to stay in Gondar — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Gondar is the former imperial capital of Ethiopia, set on the northern highlands at around 2,133 m. Nicknamed the Camelot of Africa, it is famous for its 17th-century stone castles, above all Fasil Ghebbi, the UNESCO-listed Royal Enclosure. Gondar is also the main gateway to the Simien Mountains and hosts the country's grandest Timkat (Epiphany) celebration. Most accommodation clusters around the central Piassa area, an easy walk from the castles, while panoramic resorts sit up on Goha hill overlooking the whole city.

Why stay in Gondar

🏰

A walled city of castles

Fasil Ghebbi is a royal compound ringed by a roughly 900 m wall, holding the castle of Emperor Fasilides, Iyasu's palace and Empress Mentewab's quarters. The architecture blends Portuguese, Indian and Arab influences you won't find anywhere else.

Ethiopia's most famous ceiling

Debre Berhan Selassie ('Light of the Trinity') is lined with vivid biblical murals and a ceiling of hundreds of winged angel faces, one of the iconic images of Ethiopian Orthodox art and a rare survivor of the 1888 attack.

⛰️

Base camp for the Simiens

Gondar is where most trekkers gear up before entering Simien Mountains National Park, home to Ethiopia's highest peaks, dramatic escarpments and the endemic gelada baboon.

🎉

The country's biggest Timkat

Every 19 January, Fasilides' Bath is filled with water for Timkat (Epiphany). Tens of thousands of pilgrims gather here for what is considered the single most passionately celebrated event in Ethiopia.

🚆 Getting around Gondar

✈️

Gondar Airport (GDQ)

Atse Tewodros Airport sits about 18 km south of the city. Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa in roughly 1h 20m, the fastest and easiest way to reach Gondar.

🛺

Bajaj (tuk-tuks) & minibuses

Getting around town is mostly by shared minibus and three-wheeler bajaj, both cheap. Agree the fare before you ride as a visitor; the castles and main sights are close enough to walk.

🚌

Buses to other cities

Selam Bus and Sky Bus are the most comfortable coaches. Bahir Dar (Lake Tana) is about 3 hours away; Axum and Lalibela take longer over mountain roads.

💵

Cash (Birr) is king

The currency is the Ethiopian Birr (ETB) and cash dominates. Cards are accepted only at some larger hotels; Dashen Bank has ATMs in town, but always carry backup cash.

🧭

Hire a local guide

The castles and churches have deep history, so a registered guide is worth it, and essentially required if you continue to the Simien Mountains, where a guide and scout are mandatory.

Frequently asked — where to stay in Gondar

When is the best time to visit Gondar?+

The dry season from October to March brings clear skies, ideal for touring the castles and continuing into the Simien Mountains. For the biggest Timkat (Epiphany) celebration, come around 17–19 January, but book accommodation far ahead as crowds are huge.

How many nights should I spend in Gondar?+

Fasil Ghebbi, Debre Berhan Selassie and Fasilides' Bath can be seen in one full day, but most travellers stay 1–2 nights to avoid rushing. Allow another 2–4 days if you plan to trek the Simien Mountains.

Which area of Gondar should I stay in?+

For walkable convenience, stay in central Piassa, within reach of the castles and restaurants. For views and quiet, choose Goha Hill overlooking the whole city, and for an early flight consider Azezo, near the airport road.
