Where to stay in Brno — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Brno is the Czech Republic's second city and the historic capital of Moravia, sitting roughly halfway between Prague and Vienna. It's a proper university town — tens of thousands of students, cafés and craft-beer bars on every corner, and a relaxed buzz that never tips into Prague's tourist crush. The headline sights are Špilberk Castle crowning the hill and Villa Tugendhat, a Mies van der Rohe modernist masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site that design lovers cross the continent to see. Prices undercut Prague noticeably, and you'll feel safe walking home.
Why stay in Brno
A UNESCO Bauhaus villa
Villa Tugendhat, designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1929, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a pilgrimage for anyone into modernist design. Tours are timed and capped — book online well ahead, as slots sell out fast.
A fortress in the heart of town
13th-century Špilberk Castle sits on a hill right above the old town. Once a royal seat, later a notorious Habsburg prison, today it's a museum with underground casemates and 360-degree views over the rooftops.
Relaxed student energy
Several big universities give Brno a young, café-and-craft-beer feel without the crowds. Nightlife is lively but easygoing, prices are friendly, and the centre feels safe to wander after dark.
Better value than Prague
Hotels, meals and beer all cost noticeably less than in Prague. It makes a great base for a slower, more authentic taste of Czechia — many travellers stay here and day-trip to Prague or Vienna by train.

🚆 Getting around Brno
Trams, trolleybuses & buses (DPMB)
Brno's DPMB network runs 13 tram lines, 13 trolleybus lines and dozens of bus routes covering the whole city. The old town is easily walkable, but trams are handy for Villa Tugendhat and the outer districts.
How to pay for tickets
Easiest is Beep & Go — tap a contactless card (or phone) on the yellow reader on board. Or buy in the free DPMBinfo app. SMS tickets work too (text BRNO to 90206) but need a Czech SIM.
Brno-Tuřany Airport (BRQ)
The airport sits about 7.5 km southeast of the centre. Day bus E76 and night bus N89 run straight to the main station, hlavní nádraží, so no taxi is needed.
Trains to Prague & Vienna
The central station (hlavní nádraží) edges the old town. Prague is about 2.5 hours away (256 km); Vienna just ~1.5 hours (111 km). RegioJet and ČD trains are cheap and frequent — book ahead for the best fares.
Exploring on foot
The centre is compact: Freedom Square, the Cabbage Market, the cathedral and Špilberk are all minutes apart. Most key districts are a 10–20 minute tram ride from the historic core.

How many days do you need in Brno?+

Yes — tours are online pre-booking only and capped because it's a UNESCO site. Slots sell out fast, especially on weekends and in summer, so reserve several weeks before you travel.
