Where to stay in Karlovy Vary — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Picture a narrow valley along the Teplá River, lined on both sides with pastel art-nouveau facades in pink, cream and pale blue, with mineral steam drifting up from grand colonnades right in the town center. This is Karlovy Vary, the prettiest spa town in Czechia, founded by Charles IV around 1349. It sits on more than 80 thermal springs, the hottest of which, Vřídlo, erupts up to 12 metres at 73°C. Visitors stroll the promenades sipping warm mineral water from a curved spa cup. The town is also the birthplace of the herbal liqueur Becherovka, luxury Moser crystal, and one of the oldest film festivals in the world.
Why stay in Karlovy Vary
Drink the spring water
Buy a curved porcelain spa cup, then stroll the five colonnades sipping warm mineral water straight from the springs. It tastes faintly salty and earthy — and it's the one ritual everyone does here.
A world-class film festival
KVIFF runs in early July each year, the oldest A-list festival in Central Europe, screening around 200 films. The whole town buzzes with filmmakers and stars.
Wonderfully walkable
The spa quarter is one long riverside promenade. Shops, cafés and colonnades sit close together, so you can spend all day admiring the architecture on foot — no car needed.
Distinctive souvenirs
Becherovka liqueur, Moser crystal glassware, and crisp round spa wafers (oplatky) — three things you can only buy at the source here in town.

🚆 Getting around Karlovy Vary
Bus from Prague
The most popular and cheapest option. FlixBus and RegioJet run frequently from Prague's Florenc station in about 2 hours, with many stopping at Prague Airport on the way.
Train
There's a direct train from Prague Main Station (Praha hl.n.), but it's slower at around 3.5 hours since the line winds through the hills. The bus is the better choice on this route.
Airport
The nearest major airport is Prague (PRG), about 120 km away, with direct RegioJet buses into town. Karlovy Vary has a small airport (KLV) but very limited flights.
On foot in the spa quarter
The town center is a riverside pedestrian zone with colonnades and shops clustered close together. It's easy to explore entirely on foot.
Money & payments
Czechia uses the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small shops and your spa cup.

How many days do I need in Karlovy Vary?+
One day covers the main sights and works well as a day trip from Prague. But to soak in the thermal spas, ride up to Diana Tower and stroll at a relaxed pace, two nights lets you enjoy the full spa-town atmosphere.
Is the spring water free, and what do I need?+
Tasting water from the colonnades is free, but it's worth buying a curved spa cup (lázeňský pohárek) as a keepsake — sold all over town. The water comes at various temperatures and tastes faintly mineral and salty, so sip it in small amounts.
Should I visit during the KVIFF film festival?+
Early July is the liveliest time, packed with filmmakers and a festive buzz. But hotels fill fast and prices spike, so book months ahead. If you prefer a quieter trip, avoid that week.
