How many days do you need in Bulgaria?+
5–7 days — 2 days in Sofia (Nevsky, a Rila Monastery day trip) + 2 days in Plovdiv + 2 days in Varna / the Black Sea, or on to Veliko Tarnovo if you have time.
Do Thai passport holders need a visa?+
You'll need a Schengen visa (Bulgaria joined Schengen in 2024) — apply in advance at the responsible embassy; a single visa lets you travel across the Schengen area.
Is Bulgaria expensive?+
It's the cheapest in Europe — meals run $4–9, good rooms cost $30–55 a night, and bus and train travel costs very little.
What currency does Bulgaria use?+
The Bulgarian Lev (BGN), not the euro (even though it's in the EU) — currently pegged at 1 EUR = 1.96 BGN. Keep some cash for small shops.
Tips before you go to Bulgaria
- In Bulgaria, a nod means 'no' and a head shake means 'yes' — watch out when bargaining or asking directions.
- Rila Monastery can be done as a day trip from Sofia (bus or tour, ~2 hours).
- Shopska salad and banitsa are on every menu, cheap and good any day.
- The Black Sea in summer (Jul–Aug) is packed — book Varna accommodation ahead.
- Keep some BGN cash — small shops in the old towns and monasteries don't take cards.
- Bulgaria pairs easily with Greece or Romania — cross-border buses run regularly.
