In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Picture waking up, opening the curtains, and finding the white neoclassical Bulgarian parliament building right in front of you — and a few steps beyond, the gold dome of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral catching the morning light. That is something InterContinental Sofia delivers that no other hotel in this city can. It stands on Tsar Osvoboditel street in the heart of Sofia's political-cultural district, the modern building playing off the older architecture around it. All 195 rooms and suites run a modern cream-and-soft-gold look that leans comfortable rather than flashy, with king beds, good linens, and marble bathrooms with a separate tub and shower from Premium level up. Some rooms have a small balcony to step out and take in the gold dome. Book a high floor facing Parliament Square and you get a room view that sticks with you for the whole trip. Lots of reviews agree the rooms are spotless, housekeeping is tidy, and outside noise stays low for such a central spot.
Food and amenities
The heart of a stay here is the top-floor Club InterContinental Lounge, open only to Club Floor guests and up. It runs five free-flow services: a light buffet breakfast with eggs made to order, midday snacks, afternoon tea with homemade pastries, evening cocktails and canapes that several guests say "almost count as dinner," and late-night dessert. Do the math and the Club premium pays for itself against eating out. The main restaurant, Bar & Brasserie off the lobby, does contemporary European food with native Bulgarian dishes — Tarator, a cold yogurt-and-cucumber soup, and Shopska Salad, fresh veg under white cheese. Down in the basement is the Sense Spa, with a long indoor pool lit by natural light from the ceiling, a fully equipped 24-hour gym, sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms that use rose from Bulgaria's Rose Valley. The one not to skip is the Signature Bulgarian Rose ritual, which reviewers call detailed and gentle-handed. Plenty of guests say they could spend the whole day in the hotel and still have fun.
Location and getting there
The location is the thing you cannot find anywhere else in this city — walk out the door, cross the street, and you are at Parliament Square. It is under 5 minutes on foot to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the gold-domed symbol of Sofia and one of the largest in Eastern Europe. A little further sits the ancient Byzantine-era St. Sophia Church, the National History Museum, and the handsome Ivan Vazov National Theatre. Borisova Garden, the city's big public park, is about a 10-minute walk. Easiest of all is Sofia University metro station (line M1), only about 3 minutes away — the metro reaches Sofia Airport (SOF) in just 20 minutes with no line change, or a taxi runs about 20-25 minutes. For shopping, Sofia Mall and the Vitosha Boulevard pedestrian street, lined with restaurants and nice shops, are a 10-15 minute walk. Short version: if you want to wake up and soak in Sofia entirely on foot, this location is the answer.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to make the call easier. First, the extra charges: parking in the building is billed daily, and premium Wi-Fi is charged on top of the standard Wi-Fi. Some reviews feel that at a big-chain 5-star this should just be included — if you drive in or use Wi-Fi heavily, check the details when booking. Second, Classic rooms start at about 28 square metres, normal for Europe but small if you are used to 40-plus-sqm rooms in Asian hotels. For a family of three, young kids, or a lot of luggage, upgrade to a Premium or Club room, which are noticeably roomier. Third, noise — Tsar Osvoboditel out front is a major street with a tram line, so weekday mornings and evenings bring some traffic sound, and lower rooms facing the street may hear it. Light sleepers should ask for a high floor or an inner room facing the courtyard. Last, Bulgaria is not yet a mainstream destination like Vienna or Prague, so some menu items and some staff's English may be less smooth than at an IC in a Western European capital — though overall it still sits well above this city's standard.
Our take
After working through several hundred real guest reviews, including Agoda and Booking.com averages of 9.2 and 9.1, InterContinental Sofia is a 5-star that sells a location in Sofia's cultural-political core like nothing else — paired with a Club InterContinental Lounge good enough to change how you stay, a fully loaded Sense Spa, and Bulgaria's Leading Hotel at the World Travel Awards seven years running. If the trip in your head is touring the gold dome of Alexander Nevsky in the morning, back for the pool and spa in the afternoon, then cocktails in the Club Lounge over the Parliament Square view at night — this is the most complete pick in the city. And starting around $200 a night, it is still close to half the price of an InterContinental in a Western European capital. We give it 9.2/10, best for business travelers meeting in the political quarter, couples marking a special occasion, and luxury travelers who want a big-chain 5-star experience on a reachable budget. Not the one for budget backpackers.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The location is directly across from Bulgaria's Parliament Square, and rooms facing the street get a full view of the gold dome of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Plenty of reviews agree it is the most memorable room view of their whole Sofia trip.
- The top-floor Club InterContinental Lounge serves breakfast, midday snacks, afternoon tea, evening cocktails and canapes, then late-night dessert — five free-flow services a day for Club Floor guests.
- The basement Sense Spa is fully kitted out: a long indoor pool with natural ceiling light, a 24-hour gym, sauna, steam, and treatment rooms that reviewers praise as detailed and gentle-handed.
- It has held Bulgaria's Leading Hotel from the World Travel Awards seven years running, with genuine 5-star service to IHG standards. Many reviews single out the front desk and concierge for sorting out anything you need.
- Rates start around $200 a night — close to half what an InterContinental costs in a Western European capital, for comparable facilities and a city-centre spot. Strong value for business travelers and couples chasing luxury on a budget.
- Parking in the building is billed daily, and premium Wi-Fi (for high-speed streaming) carries a separate fee. Several reviews feel both should be folded into the room rate at this 5-star level — check the details at booking if you drive in or rely on heavy Wi-Fi.
- Classic rooms start at about 28 sqm, which is normal by European standards but can feel tight if you are used to 40-plus-sqm rooms in Asia. For three people or a lot of luggage, upgrading to a Premium or Club room is worth it.
- Rooms facing Tsar Osvoboditel street can pick up tram and traffic noise during weekday rush hours. Light sleepers should request a higher floor on the inner side or pack earplugs.

Insider Tips
- Book a Club Floor room or higher to use the Club InterContinental Lounge — five food services plus free cocktails add up to better value than booking an entry room and eating dinner out.
- Ask for a high front-facing room and note "facing Parliament Square" when booking, so you get the parliament building and the Alexander Nevsky gold dome together in one frame.
- It is a 5-minute walk to the gold dome — hit the local cafes around the square early in the morning before the tourists arrive for the real Sofia feel.
