Where to stay in Sundarbans — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Picture waking up on a boat moored in brackish water, mist drifting over the mangroves, birdsong coming from every direction. This is the Sundarbans — the largest mangrove forest on Earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bangladesh portion alone spans more than 6,017 square kilometres and shelters around 125 Royal Bengal tigers, saltwater crocodiles, spotted deer, and over 300 bird species. Here's the honest part: this isn't a place with a row of downtown hotels to pick from. The whole experience is built around a 2-3 night liveaboard cruise, with the cities of Khulna and the port of Mongla as your gateways. So this guide covers what actually matters — choosing the right vessel, what to see, what to eat in Khulna, and how to get there without guessing.

Why stay in Sundarbans

🐅

On the trail of the Bengal tiger

The Sundarbans is one of the few places on Earth where tigers swim between islands. Even spotting a fresh pugmark on a mudbank is a thrill — and the lucky few catch a glimpse from the boat.

🌿

The largest mangrove forest on Earth

A single, continuous mangrove ecosystem unlike anywhere else: tangled stilt roots, winding tidal creeks, and a stillness you simply can't find in a city.

🦅

A paradise for birders and wildlife fans

Kingfishers, sea eagles, spotted deer, macaques, saltwater crocodiles and mudskippers. Binoculars and patience are your most important gear here.

🛥️

A genuine sleep-in-the-wild cruise

No roads, no jungle hotels — everything happens on the boat. Wake to the mist, eat breakfast on the water. It's an experience no city can offer.

🚆 Getting around Sundarbans

✈️

Fly Dhaka to Jessore/Khulna

A 45-minute domestic flight from Dhaka to Jessore Airport (JSR) on Biman, US-Bangla or Novoair, then about 1.5 hours by road into Khulna. The fastest option if you're short on time.

🚆

Sundarban Express via Padma Bridge

The Sundarban Express runs Dhaka–Khulna over the Padma Bridge, cutting more than 200 km and saving 4-5 hours versus the old route. Fares start around 500 taka and the ride is comfortable and scenic.

🚌

Bus from Dhaka, 4-7 hours

AC buses cover the roughly 280 km from Dhaka to Khulna in 4-7 hours via the Padma Bridge. The budget choice, with many operators running all day.

🛥️

The liveaboard is your transport

There are no roads in the forest — everything is by boat. Tours leave from jetties in Khulna or Mongla, and the same vessel is both your transport and hotel for 2-3 days, with small skiffs for narrow creeks.

💵

Taka, bKash & forest permits

The Bangladeshi taka (BDT) rules, and in town bKash/Nagad mobile wallets are everywhere. Entering the forest requires a Forest Department permit plus an armed guard escort (around Tk 500/day) — all arranged by your tour operator.

Frequently asked — where to stay in Sundarbans

Where do I sleep — are there hotels in the forest?+

There are no hotels in the forest. Most visitors sleep on a liveaboard vessel for 2-3 nights (AC and non-AC cabins, all meals included), and stay in a Khulna city hotel the night before and after. Choosing a good boat is the heart of this trip.

When's the best time, and will I actually see a tiger?+

November to February is best — cool, dry weather, calm water and peak migratory birds. As for tigers, be realistic: with only ~125 in a vast forest, sightings are rare. But fresh pugmarks, crocodiles, deer, monkeys and hundreds of bird species show up on almost every trip.

Do I need to arrange permits myself? Is it hard to get there?+

No DIY needed. The forest requires a Forest Department permit and an armed guard escort, but tour operators bundle all of this into the package. Your only job is to reach Khulna or Mongla on time — everything else is handled.
