Where to stay in Oran — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Oran is Algeria's second-largest city and its great Mediterranean port — the place the French once nicknamed 'Little Paris' and the birthplace of Raï music. The Spanish-built Fort Santa Cruz crowns Mount Murdjadjo above the bay, the old Spanish-Ottoman quarter winds through Sidi El Houari, and the palm-lined Front de Mer makes for an unbeatable evening stroll. This guide covers the real neighborhoods to stay in, what to see and eat, and how to get around.
Why stay in Oran
Birthplace of Raï music
Oran is where Raï was born — the gritty Algerian folk music that went global. It grew out of the city's nightclubs and cabarets in its 'Little Paris' heyday, and the sound still echoes through cafés and summer festivals along the seafront.
A Spanish fortress crown
Fort Santa Cruz was built by the Spanish between 1577 and 1604 atop Mount Murdjadjo. From up here you get the best panorama of the bay and the whole city — the go-to spot for views and photos.
Layers of empires
Spain, the Ottomans and France all left their mark: the Sidi El Houari old town, Ottoman mosques, the Bey's Palace and rows of colonial-era Art Deco facades all sit within walking distance.
A city by the sea
Oran hugs the Mediterranean. The Front de Mer boulevard runs nearly 2 km past palms and cafés, while Les Andalouses beach offers clear water that's swimmable through the warm season.

🚆 Getting around Oran
Ahmed Ben Bella Airport (Es Senia)
Oran's main international airport (code ORN) sits about 15 km from the city. Buses and taxis run into town; a Yassir ride from the center to the airport runs around 600–700 DZD.
Tram
A modern, air-conditioned tram covers about 19 km, linking the southern districts (Es Senia) to the east (Sidi Maarouf) via the city center at Place du 1er Novembre. A single ticket is around 40 DZD.
Taxis & ride-hailing
Taxis are plentiful and cheap — hail one on the street, or use Yassir / Heetch to skip language barriers and price haggling. Pay in cash; best for short to mid-range city hops.
Cash is king
The currency is the Algerian Dinar (DZD). Big hotels and some upscale restaurants take cards, but taxis, small shops and street food are cash-only — always carry some.
Visa & when to go
An Algerian visa must be arranged in advance through an embassy or consulate, with at least 6 months' passport validity. The best months to visit are April–June and October–November, when the weather is mild.

Is Oran safe to visit?+
Oran is considered safe for tourists. As Algeria's second city and a major port, it has a strong police presence. Watch for petty pickpocketing in crowds and keep valuables secure. The desert border regions far to the south/east (near Mali, Niger, Libya, etc.) should be avoided, but Oran sits on the Mediterranean coast and is well away from them.
Where should I stay in Oran?+
First-timers do best in the city center around Front de Mer / Place du 1er Novembre, within walking distance of the seafront, Lions Square and the Opera House. History buffs should pick Sidi El Houari, the old town, while those wanting a quiet beach base can choose Canastel or Les Andalouses.
When is the best time to visit Oran?+
The best months are April–June and October–November, with comfortable temperatures of 20–27°C. June–September is hot but great for the beach (sea temperatures 20–27°C). Remember to arrange your Algerian visa before you travel.
