Hotel Grano de Oro is a 1900 Victorian timber mansion that a Canadian couple restored into a 5-star, 40-room boutique on Paseo Colón, right in the middle of San José, Costa Rica. The heart of the place is a central atrium garden — a trickling stone fountain, palms reaching up through the glass roof, and birdsong all day. Rooms run on antique wood furniture, terracotta tile floors and handwoven cotton, and no two are alike. Climb to the roof and you find two Jacuzzis with sun loungers facing the distant Cerros de Escazú. The other draw is the French restaurant of the same name, run by a French chef and rated by locals as one of San José's best tables. It's a 10-minute walk to Parque La Sabana, 15 to Mercado Central, and a 25–30 minute drive from Juan Santamaría airport. From about $205 a night, it scores 9.3/10 — a romantic pick for couples and anyone who wants real character in the city center.

  • 1900 Victorian mansion, beautifully restored down to every corner
  • French restaurant locals still reserve tables at
  • Private rooftop Jacuzzis with a city view
  • Streets around the hotel feel deserted after dark — take a cab
  • Thin walls in the old building carry sound from next door

It sits only about 10 minutes by car from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), with downtown reachable in 25 to 30 minutes. Picture a 161-room boutique hotel sitting in the best district of San Jose — Escazu, where younger Costa Ricans and expats come out for coffee, work from cafes, and meet for dinner every evening. The Hyatt Centric San Jose Escazu sits right on Avenida Escazu, next to the City Place complex with roughly 30 restaurants a short walk away. The 12-storey building opened in 2017 and was designed to echo Costa Rica's rainforest with wood tones, moss green, and walls hung with work by local artists. The one thing every review agrees on is the rooftop infinity pool on floor 12 with the Cerros de Escazú mountains as a backdrop, plus Cervecería 8ª Calle, the rooftop bar pouring local craft beer. Rates start around $149 a night, with guest scores of 8.6 on Agoda and 8.7 on Booking — strong value in a district where comparable hotels usually cost more. It is about 20 minutes from SJO airport, which suits business travelers flying in for meetings and trip-starters who want a stylish first night in Costa Rica.

  • Escazu location puts good restaurants within walking distance

Crowne Plaza San Jose La Sabana by IHG is a 4-star, 273-room business hotel sitting on the edge of La Sabana Park, the largest and best-loved green space in San Jose — walk one block from the lobby and you reach more than 70 hectares of parkland where locals run and cycle every morning. The whole building was renovated in 2023, so the rooms feel new and lean modern in earthy tones. The draw most people know is Fuji, a long-running Japanese kitchen where San Jose has celebrated special occasions for over three decades, and Nattivo Urban Cuisine, which reworks local Costa Rican ingredients in a contemporary style. The location on Ruta 27 puts Juan Santamaria (SJO) airport about 15 minutes away by car — handy for a transit night before an onward flight, or the first and last night of a trip out to the cloud forest or Pacific coast. It rates 8.5/10 from real guests, best for business travelers, couples and families who would rather sleep beside the green than in the busy downtown.

Preguntas frecuentes
