Port Moresby — universally shortened to POM — is the capital of Papua New Guinea, perched on the south coast facing the Coral Sea just 850 km north of Cairns. This is not a casual sightseeing city: PNG sits at Level 3 on every Western travel advisory, so the guide is built for business travelers, APEC delegates, oil-and-gas executives, Coral Triangle divers and Kokoda Trail trekkers who arrive prepared. Three zones matter when choosing where to stay — Waigani for the government-and-embassy quarter near Parliament House and the Nature Park, Downtown for Ela Beach strolls in daylight, and Jacksons for fast airport transits. Our 10 picks span the flagship Stanley Hotel and Suites (linked into Vision City Mall) and Hilton at Star Mountain Plaza, through Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn Express and Lamana, the airport-walkable Airways and Gateway, and the offshore Loloata Island Resort — every one with perimeter walls, 24/7 guards and pre-booked airport pickup. Jacksons (POM) is 11 km east; currency is the PGK Kina (about 3.7 to the USD); Thai passports get 60-day visa-free entry via free eTA. Visit May to October for the dry-cool window (22-28°C), always pre-book hotel transport, and never walk after dark.

The Stanley Hotel and Suites is Port Moresby's 5-star flagship in the government district of Waigani, open since 2016. It's a 19-storey tower with 429 rooms and suites, starting around $150 a night. The reason diplomats, oil-and-gas executives and APEC delegates keep choosing it: the hotel, Vision City Mega Mall, a cinema, a supermarket, a food court and a spread of restaurants all sit inside one guarded compound - you walk between them without ever stepping outside the fence, which matters a lot in a city where foreign visitors still worry about the streets. Inside there's a 40-metre outdoor lap pool that's genuinely rare here, the Zen Spa for massage and treatments, a 24-hour gym, and dining that runs from an international buffet up to Silver Leaf's premium Chinese kitchen. Jacksons (POM) airport is roughly 15-20 minutes away by car. It rates 8.6/10 on Agoda and 8.5 on Booking.

  • Walks straight into Vision City Mega Mall without leaving the compound
  • 40-metre lap pool plus the smartest spa in the city
  • High security with guards on every side, 24 hours a day
  • Pricey against comparable hotels elsewhere in the region
  • In-room Wi-Fi runs slow and drops on some nights

Real-guest scores average 8.7 on Agoda and 8.6 on Booking, with near-unanimous praise for safety, cleanliness, breakfast, and warm staff. Grand Papua Hotel is a 156-room 5-star under the Radisson Individuals banner, sitting on Mary Street in the middle of Port Moresby's Downtown CBD. It opened in 2011, and the draw is the private balconies that look out over Port Moresby harbour and Ela Beach, plus a key-card Ladies-Only floor that makes solo women travelers feel a lot safer. The kitchen at Grand Brasserie gets repeat praise for its breakfast buffet and international dinners, and the hotel has become the default base for Australian executives and diplomats working in the PNG capital. Rooms start around $126 a night. Ela Beach is a 10-minute walk, though staff steer most guests into the hotel car for safety. The airport is 25-40 minutes out depending on traffic. Loloata Island Resort is a 5-star resort on a private island in Bootless Bay, just about 20 minutes by road from Port Moresby to the marina, then a 10-minute resort speedboat across to the island. A full renovation reopened it in 2019 under new owners, making it the most modern resort in the Bootless Bay area. The roughly 56 villas and bungalows are scattered along the beach and across the island's low hills, and the headline rooms are the Overwater Villas that jut out over the Coral Sea reef — lean off the balcony and you can watch fish swim past below. The resort is best known for its full PADI dive center, with speedboats running divers out to 29 dive sites in the surrounding water. Rates start around $270 a night, and it's one of the few places near Port Moresby where you can genuinely switch off without thinking about safety in town. Overall score 8.6/10.

Lamana Hotel is a 4-star hotel that has been part of Port Moresby for decades, and locals in the Waigani district know it by name. It sits on Famagusta Road, a few minutes from Parliament House and the National Museum. The draw isn't polish — it's everything in one place. You get three restaurants (international buffet, seafood, and Asian), a lounge bar, in-house bowling, a gym, an outdoor pool, and The Gold Club, the most famous nightspot in the city. The free 24-hour airport shuttle makes it genuinely easy for business travelers landing late. Rates start at about $100 a night, which is good value by Port Moresby standards. The one thing to weigh: Friday and Saturday nights carry noise from the club, so light sleepers should request a room well away from that zone. The overall score is 8.0/10 — a fit for business guests, couples who don't mind late-night sound, and anyone who wants a base in the government district.

  • Everything in one building — three restaurants, bowling, and a club

IHG in the government districtfree breakfastfast free Wi-Fi (rare in PNG)10 minutes to the airport

Holiday Inn Express Port Moresby is IHG's lean-luxury option in the heart of Waigani, the government district of Port Moresby, and it's built squarely for business travelers and people flying solo. The two things that make the $100/night rate punch above its weight are free hot breakfast every morning and free unlimited Wi-Fi — both worth real money in PNG, where internet is pricey and patchy. The hotel sits inside a gated compound with 24-hour security checking vehicles in and out, which answers the safety question most people have before coming to PNG. It's about a 10-minute drive to Jacksons International Airport and close to both Parliament House and the National Museum. Guests rate it Agoda 8.0 / Booking 7.9 / Trip 4.5. The midscale rooms are right-sized — soft beds, cold air-con, a pressure shower, everything practical rather than plush. Overall 8.0/10, and the best fit for a solo business traveler who puts safety, convenience and value first.

  • Free hot breakfast plus fast free Wi-Fi — genuinely great value in PNG
  • Gated compound with 24-hour security, reassuring for solo travelers
  • Waigani location near the airport and government offices
  • No pool and no spa, so not built for a leisure stay
  • You have to drive to leave the compound — not a walkable area

Ela Beach Hotel and Apartments is a 4-star property in the Coral Sea Hotels group, sitting on Ela Beach Road in the heart of Downtown Port Moresby, directly across from the esplanade and Ela Beach that has become the city's icon. There are about 116 rooms and apartments, split into a Hotel Wing for short stays and an Apartments Wing of 1-2 bedroom units with a kitchen for longer ones. What stands out is that it's one of the very few hotels in the CBD with a genuine sea view, backed by the fence and security setup this city expects. There are two pools, the all-day Salt Restaurant, the Italian-style Enzo's Pizza, and a free shuttle to Jacksons Airport that cuts out the eye-watering taxi fares here. Rooms start around $91/night, and the overall score is 7.9/10 — a fit for business travelers, families and safety-minded visitors who want to wake up to the sea in a part of town where that view is hard to find.

Gateway Hotel and Apartments is a 4-star property in the Coral Sea Hotels group, parked directly across the road from Jacksons International Airport (POM) — you can walk to the terminal or call the free 24-hour shuttle any time of day or night. There are 130 hotel rooms plus another 63 serviced apartments, all wrapped around a resort-style pool in the middle of the building, and a remarkable 5 restaurants under one roof: international buffet, Chinese, Italian, and an Aussie pub. Rates start around $80 a night, with real review averages of 7.4/10 on Agoda and 7.3 on Booking. The draw here isn't glamour — it's pure convenience for anyone flying out at dawn, landing late, connecting through, or staging for a Kokoda Track trek. The one catch: don't expect to walk anywhere, since the surroundings are airport land and warehouses, not a neighborhood for an evening stroll.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Port Moresby actually safe to visit in 2026?
It's safe IF you follow the rules. PNG sits at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) on every Western advisory because of high opportunistic crime and raskol gangs. But thousands of business travelers, divers and Kokoda trekkers visit every year without incident by sticking to international-chain hotels with security perimeters, using hotel transport for every move, never walking between locations, and never being out after dark. This is not a city for casual tourism — but it's absolutely doable for prepared travelers.
When is the best time of year to visit Port Moresby?
May through October — the dry-cool season — is by far the best window, with temperatures of 22-28°C, low humidity, and reliable diving visibility. June, July and August are the sweet spot, and they overlap with the highland sing-sing festivals (Mount Hagen August, Goroka September). November-April is hot, humid and monsoon-wet (25-32°C with heavy rain), and some domestic flights and dive operators scale back.
Which neighborhood should I stay in — Waigani, Downtown or Jacksons?
Waigani is best for diplomats, government business and museum/parliament visits (Stanley, Hilton, Holiday Inn Express, Lamana). Downtown puts you on Ela Beach with sunset views (Crowne Plaza, Ela Beach Hotel) — good for short stays and cruise-ship arrivals. Jacksons (airport area) suits short layovers or 1-night transits (Airways, Gateway — both walking distance from the terminal). Whichever you pick, your hotel choice matters far more than the suburb.
How do I get from Jacksons Airport to my hotel safely?
Pre-book your hotel's airport pickup at the time you book the room — every recommended property offers it for roughly 50-100 PGK ($14-27). Do not take a taxi off the rank, and absolutely never take a PMV (public mini-bus). The Airways Hotel and Gateway Hotel are walkable from the terminal if you want to skip the transfer for a quick layover. The drive into Waigani or Downtown takes about 20-30 minutes.
Do I need a visa for Papua New Guinea?
Most Western and many Asian passport holders (EU, US, UK, Australia, NZ, Canada, Thailand, Singapore, Japan and more) get a 60-day visa-free entry via a free online eTA, applied for in advance at the official PNG immigration portal. Apply at least a week before travel. Make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and 2+ blank pages.
Is the Kokoda Trail something I can just turn up and do?
No. The Kokoda Trail is a 96-km, 8-10 day jungle trek through the Owen Stanley Range — one of the genuinely hard treks of the world. You must book through a licensed tour operator months in advance, with mandatory PNG porters and guides, a permit, and serious cardio fitness. Most trekkers fly into POM, transfer to Owers Corner, walk to Kokoda village, and fly back. Budget USD 3,500-5,500 all-in. May-September only.
