Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) sits in Nantou County at an elevation of roughly 748 metres and is Taiwan's largest freshwater lake — 7.93 square kilometres of water ringed by green hills and morning mist that lingers year-round. The shoreline is packed with ancient temples, observation towers, indigenous communities, and a cycling trail that CNNGo ranked among the most scenic in the world.
#1 Wenwu Temple
Wenwu Temple is the most striking temple on the lakeshore. Built in 1969 in the style of a Chinese imperial palace — the original was submerged when the dam raised the water level — it divides into three halls dedicated to the deity of literature, Guan Yu, and Confucius. The upper floors offer a full panoramic view across the lake. Admission is free, every day from 08:00 to 20:00.
- Arriving just after 07:00 gets you the best shots of the temple against mist and water before the tour groups arrive.
- Two large lion statues flank the entrance stairs — the most photographed spot at the temple.
- The viewing terrace at the rear of the complex is quieter than the front during late morning.
#2 Sun Moon Lake Ropeway
The ropeway has been running since 2009, designed by Austria's Doppelmayr over a 1,877-metre span. The gondolas come in red, yellow, blue, and green — representing the sun, moon, lake, and forest. The glass-floor green cabin rides 142 metres above the ground and earns its reputation for vertigo. The lake view from the cable car has a Michelin three-star rating.
- A combined ticket with Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village is cheaper than buying the ropeway separately.
- Glass-floor cabins (green) require advance booking or a separate queue at a dedicated window.
- Weekends and public holidays mean long waits — go early or book online.
#3 Ita Thao Village
Ita Thao is the home village of the Thao people — Taiwan's smallest indigenous group, with a population of around 800. The village has stalls selling traditional crafts and street food made from old recipes, and hosts multiple cultural music and dance performances daily. The atmosphere is relaxed and lively throughout the day.
- Check the cultural performance schedule at the Ita Thao Visitor Centre — shows usually run at 10:00 and 14:00.
- Try the grilled wild boar sausage and sticky rice served in a bamboo tube, both local staples.
- The Ita Thao Pier is the main stop for the lake ferry circuit, so logistics are easy.
#4 Xuanzang Temple
Xuanzang Temple was built in 1965 by the Nantou city government to honour the Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang (of Journey to the West fame), who made the overland pilgrimage from China to India. The temple's third floor enshrines a relic of the monk, received from Japan in 1955. The atmosphere is calm and open, with good lake views from the temple terrace.
- The route passes Xuanguang Temple Pier — a popular boat stop — just before reaching Xuanzang.
- The walk or cycle from the pier to Xuanzang Temple takes around 10 to 15 minutes.
- The second floor has an incense-offering area that photographs well.
#5 Ci'en Pagoda
Ci'en Pagoda is an octagonal, nine-storey tower standing 46 metres tall, commissioned by President Chiang Kai-shek in 1971 in memory of his mother. It sits on Chapalon Mountain at 954 metres — the pagoda's crown reaches 1,000 metres above sea level. From the upper floors you get a 360-degree view of Sun Moon Lake and the surrounding ranges. It ranks among the best viewpoints on the lake circuit.
- The stairway climb from the main road takes 20 to 30 minutes, through shaded forest.
- There is a bell on the top floor for visitors to ring as a local tradition.
- Coming at sunset turns the lake surface gold — one of the better landscape shots around the lake.
#6 Sun Moon Lake Cycling Trail
The 33-kilometre loop trail around Sun Moon Lake was ranked by CNNGo as one of the most scenic cycling routes in the world. It runs along the waterfront, through forest, past temples, and through villages. Highlights include a 400-metre overwater bike path and a 2025 extension from Ita Thao to Nine Frogs Stack, running along a boardwalk through bamboo forest.
- Bike rental near Shuishe Pier runs about NT$150–250 for a half-day.
- E-bikes are the smarter call on the hillier southern sections.
- Starting before 08:00 avoids the main crowds and the midday heat.
#7 Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village
Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village is a 62-hectare cultural park that has been open since 1986. It brings together the traditions of 9 indigenous groups in one site — replica villages, music and ritual performances, craft demonstrations, and a European garden section. The entrance ticket includes the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway. It works well for families with children.
- The combined ropeway ticket makes it easy to cover both attractions in one day.
- Cultural performances run several times daily — check the schedule at the entrance when you buy your ticket.
- Spring brings a cherry blossom festival to the European garden section.
