Sendai is Tohoku's largest city and the former stronghold of the great warlord Date Masamune. It carries the nickname "City of Trees" because its main boulevards are lined year-round with lush keyaki elms. Beyond the city's own historical sites, Sendai is the gateway to Matsushima Bay — one of Japan's most celebrated scenic views — just 40 minutes away.
#1 Aoba Castle Ruins (Sendai Castle)
Date Masamune built this castle in 1600 on the 130-metre Aoba Hill. The main keep was destroyed in World War II, but the stone walls and an equestrian statue of Date Masamune still stand. From here you get a 360-degree panorama spanning the city of Sendai, the Sendai Plain, and out to the Pacific Ocean. The Aoba Castle Exhibition Hall on site is open for visits.
- The Loople Sendai bus from Sendai Station drops you right at the castle — the easiest way up.
- During cherry-blossom season (April), flowers bloom all along the castle walls.
- Aoba Castle Exhibition Hall is open 9:00–17:00; admission ¥770.
#2 Matsushima Bay
The bay holds more than 260 islands draped in curved, wind-shaped pines. It is one of the Nihon Sankei — Japan's three most celebrated scenic views — alongside Miyajima and Amanohashidate. Beyond the bay cruise, a single day comfortably covers Zuigan-ji Temple, Fukuura Bridge, and Entsuin Temple nearby.
- A 50-minute bay cruise weaving between the islands is not to be missed — tickets cost ¥1,500.
- Autumn (November) brings vivid foliage colour to the islands.
- Stalls along the pier sell kakigori shaved ice and fresh grilled oysters from the bay.
#3 Zuihoden Mausoleum
This ornate mausoleum was built in 1637 to enshrine the remains of Date Masamune. Its Momoyama-style decoration — gilded carvings and oyster-shell detailing on the walls — is exceptionally elaborate. The structure is surrounded by centuries-old cedar forest. The grounds also hold two secondary mausoleums for Date Mitsumune and Date Tsunamune.
- Admission ¥570; open 9:00–16:30 (closes earlier in winter).
- You climb 130 steps through cedar forest to reach the mausoleum — the atmosphere is quiet and striking.
- A small museum beside the mausoleum displays artefacts uncovered during restoration work.
#4 Zuigan-ji Temple
The oldest Rinzai-Shingon temple in Tohoku, founded in 828 and renovated by Date Masamune between 1604 and 1609. The main hall was designated a National Treasure in 1953. The approach path runs through cedar forest with hundreds of stone-carved Buddhist figures set into cave niches on either side.
- Admission ¥700; allow about an hour to take in the cave carvings and the main hall.
- Entsuin Temple, decorated with hidden Western motifs, sits right next door — worth combining.
- Autumn foliage along the cedar-lined approach creates a particularly atmospheric walk.
#5 Osaki Hachimangu Shrine
Date Masamune built this Shinto shrine in 1607; it was designated a National Treasure in 1952. The Momoyama-style architecture — gold decoration on black lacquer — is rare and difficult to find anywhere else. Every January it hosts the Dontosai, a New Year fire festival in which young men parade through the cold wearing little more than a loincloth.
- Free admission, open all day — the cedar forest surrounding the shrine has a genuinely peaceful feel.
- Dontosai is held on 14 January each year; it's one of Sendai's most unusual and memorable events.
- Pair this visit with Zuihoden Mausoleum, which is a short distance away.
#6 Fukuurajima Island
A small 6-hectare island connected to the shore by the red wooden Fukuurabashi bridge, which stretches 252 metres across the water. The island is a natural botanical garden with more than 250 species of rare plants, traces of ancient settlement from archaeological excavations, and a Benzaiten shrine that has been in continuous worship for over 1,000 years.
- The bridge toll is ¥200; a full walk around the island takes about 30–40 minutes.
- The island path offers views of Matsushima Bay from several different angles.
- Go on a clear day to photograph the red bridge reflected against the blue sea.
#7 Jozenji-dori Street
Sendai's main boulevard — 700 metres long — nicknamed "the city's heartbeat," lined with keyaki elms that put on a different show every season. Two major events take place here each year: the Jozenji Street Jazz Festival in September and the SENDAI Pageant of Starlight winter illumination.
- In mid-December, the Pageant of Starlight wraps the keyaki trees in white light — one of Sendai's most atmospheric evenings.
- The street connects directly into the Ichiban-cho Shotengai shopping arcade, which has more than 100 shops.
- Autumn is when the keyaki trees turn their most vivid yellow.
#8 Sendai Tanabata Festival
Japan's largest Tanabata festival, held every year on 6–8 August. It is one of the Tohoku Sandai Matsuri — Tohoku's three great festivals — alongside Akita's Kanto Matsuri and Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri. The highlight is thousands of vibrant paper-and-bamboo streamers handmade from washi paper, hung in cascades along the covered shopping arcades throughout the city.
- Book accommodation 3–6 months ahead for the festival period — hotels fill up very fast.
- The Sendai Tanabata Fireworks display on the evening of 5 August (the night before the festival) is spectacular.
- Each streamer is handcrafted by a different community group or school, and each carries its own meaning.
