Pisa looks like a one-hour stopover — but walk past the tower square and the city opens up into something quieter and more interesting than most group tours ever reach. Piazza dei Miracoli packs 4 UNESCO World Heritage structures into a single lawn, and the old town along the Arno at dusk has a calm that Florence simply cannot offer anymore.
#1 Leaning Tower of Pisa
One of the most recognisable structures on earth. This Romanesque bell tower stands 56 metres tall, construction began in 1173, and it started tilting almost immediately — the soft sandy soil mixed with shells beneath the foundations gave way during the build. Engineers stabilised the lean between 1990 and 2001; it now sits at 3.97 degrees off vertical. Climb 294 steps to the top for views over the Arno and the rooftops of Pisa.
- Tickets to climb cost €20 and must be booked online in advance at opapisa.it — especially June through August.
- Only 45 people are allowed up at a time, and bags must be left at the bottom. No bags on the tower.
- The classic forced-perspective photo works best from roughly 30–40 metres east of the tower.
#2 Pisa Cathedral
Built in 1064, this is the original model for Pisan Romanesque — a style that spread across Italy and into Europe. Inside: Byzantine mosaics, frescoes by Giovanni Pisano, and a brass chandelier that supposedly swung as Galileo watched and inspired his pendulum law. Entry is free but you need a ticket.
- Free entry, but you must collect a free ticket from the ticket office outside before going in — no ticket, no entry.
- Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered. Wraps are available at the entrance if you need one.
- Find Giovanni Pisano's Pulpit at the centre of the nave — considered one of the finest Romanesque sculptures in the world.
#3 Pisa Baptistery
The largest circular baptistery in Italy, built in stages from 1152 to 1363 — which is why the lower half is Romanesque and the upper half Gothic, two styles in one building. The acoustics inside are extraordinary, and staff regularly give short singing demonstrations to show them off. Crowds here are noticeably thinner than at the tower. The ticket is combined with Camposanto.
- A combined ticket for the Baptistery, Camposanto, and Museo delle Sinopie costs €7–9 — better value than buying separately.
- Staff do acoustic demonstrations every 30–40 minutes. Wait a few minutes — the sound in the round dome is worth it.
- Climb to the upper gallery for a different angle on the square and the Leaning Tower.
#4 Camposanto Monumentale
The quietest and most atmospheric spot in the square. Built in 1277, this rectangular cemetery is enclosed by Gothic marble cloisters. Legend holds that the soil inside was brought from Calvary in Jerusalem by Crusaders. The cloister walls once held magnificent Romanesque-Gothic frescoes, but bombing in World War II destroyed most of them — only the sinopie (preparatory sketches) survive, moved to a nearby museum.
- Included on the combined ticket — do not skip it. After the crowds at the tower, this is the calmest place in the whole complex.
- Look for the Triumph of Death fresco (a copy is displayed here) — a striking window into medieval attitudes toward mortality.
- The marble floor slabs are worth reading: some are over 700 years old, with Latin and multi-language inscriptions.
#5 Knights' Square
The most beautiful square in Pisa, and one most visitors never find. It was the political heart of the city through the medieval and Renaissance periods. The central building, Palazzo della Carovana, was designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1562 and decorated with graffito work — patterns carved through white plaster to reveal dark stone beneath, showing zodiac signs and knights' crests. Today it houses the Scuola Normale Superiore, one of Italy's most selective universities. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried — find a table at one of the café terraces and sit for a while.
- Bar Cavalieri on the square serves espresso and brioche the local way, at prices noticeably lower than the tower zone.
- Look for the Torre della Fame (Tower of Starvation), linked to the legend of Count Ugolino — the same story Dante placed in Canto 33 of the Inferno.
- The square sits inside the University of Pisa campus, so the energy is genuinely student-city, not just tourist.
#6 Lungarno Riverfront
The Arno embankment at dusk is what separates Pisa from a straightforward day-trip destination. No group tour buses here — just Pisans out walking along Lungarno Mediceo and Lungarno Gambacorti, gelato shops, café terraces, and Ponte di Mezzo as the neighbourhood meeting point. This is the Pisa the brochures don't photograph.
- Walk the north bank (Lungarno Mediceo) before dinner — the gelaterias here are where locals go, not the tourist-facing spots near the tower.
- Check under the bridges for street art by local artists — several pieces are genuinely worth a look.
- If you only have one night in Pisa, keep 18:00–20:00 free for a river walk before your train. The shift in atmosphere from the tower square is stark.

Before You Pack
Pisa is at its best before 9:00 in the morning — before the group tours arrive — or after 17:00 when the white cathedral catches the golden light. Allow at least half a day, ideally a full day, so you're not rushed. And book the Leaning Tower online before you leave home: walk-ups are not available.
