Orchard Road is the backbone of Singapore — a 2.2-kilometre strip packed with world-class department stores, luxury boutiques, and a surprising range of cultural stops. It's more than shopping: this same corridor holds a UNESCO World Heritage garden, the Presidential Palace, and a perfectly preserved early-20th-century heritage enclave. There's something for every kind of traveler, from luxury shoppers to architecture enthusiasts.
#1 ION Orchard
The mall that has become the symbol of Orchard Road. It opened in 2009 with its signature curved-glass design and brings together over 300 stores, from Louis Vuitton to Prada. The basement levels (B1–B4) are packed with food halls and premium dining. The headline draw is ION Sky on the 56th floor — panoramic views of Singapore, free entry — and ION ART on Level 4, a free gallery space.
- ION Sky on Level 56 is free; open Tuesday–Sunday 14:00–21:30.
- Levels B1–B4 have local food options at more approachable prices than the upper floors.
- Connects directly to Orchard MRT — you never need to step outside.
#2 Ngee Ann City (Takashimaya)
A landmark shopping complex built in the style of grand Chinese architecture, its two 18-floor towers referencing guardian deities of the gate. Inside sits the largest Takashimaya department store in Southeast Asia, the region's second-largest Kinokuniya bookshop, and a range of global luxury brands. The basement level B2 Food Hall is consistently one of the most popular stops on the street.
- Kinokuniya on Level 3 stocks a strong selection of Southeast Asian titles.
- The B2 Food Hall carries quality imported goods and gift items.
- Underground passages connect to ION Orchard and Orchard MRT station.
#3 Mandarin Gallery
A compact luxury boutique mall attached to Hilton Singapore Orchard, having undergone a S$200 million refurbishment. The focus is on high-end labels and emerging designers. The atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed than the larger malls, and the soaring glass facade makes it one of the more photogenic spots on the strip. Ippudo ramen and a curated selection of restaurants are on-site.
- Quieter and less crowded than ION — good for a relaxed browse.
- Level 2 features Singapore designers including Ashley Isham.
- Open daily 11:00–22:00.
#4 313@somerset
The most energetic mall on the strip, aimed at a younger crowd and connected directly to Somerset MRT. Over 200 stores cover accessible fashion brands like Zara, Uniqlo, and Cotton On. Level 5 houses a large food court with 21 Asian food stalls, and Discovery Walk — an outdoor dining lane on the exterior — stays lively throughout the day.
- Discovery Walk outside the mall has restaurant seating in the open air.
- Level B1 has a Cold Storage supermarket — good for snacks and affordable souvenirs.
- Open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
#5 Emerald Hill Road
A quiet lane tucked behind the bustle of Orchard Road, lined with Chinese Baroque shophouses dating to the early 20th century. It was once a residential enclave for Straits Chinese elite, and is now a gazetted conservation area. A handful of houses have been converted into atmospheric bars; the entire street photographs well from every angle. It's a 2-minute walk from Somerset station.
- Early evening is the best time — bars start opening and the light is warm.
- The pastel shophouses at the entrance are free to photograph any time.
- Look for the distinctive pintu pagar (half-swing timber gates) — a rare surviving detail.
#6 Singapore Botanic Gardens
The only tropical botanic garden in the world to hold UNESCO World Heritage status — and it sits just 5 minutes from Orchard Road. The grounds cover 82 hectares. The standout is the National Orchid Garden, which holds over 1,000 orchid species and 2,000 hybrids. General admission is free around the clock; the Orchid Garden charges S$5 entry.
- The main gardens are free 24 hours; only the National Orchid Garden has an entry fee.
- The Bandstand area between 07:00 and 09:00 is full of morning exercisers — a genuine slice of local life.
- Dogs are permitted on some paths — check the map at the entrance before heading in.
#7 The Istana
Singapore's Presidential Palace — a Neo-Palladian mansion set on over 40 hectares right on Orchard Road, built during the British colonial era. Most of the grounds open only on public holidays (Open House days): Chinese New Year, Labour Day, Eid, and National Day. Entry on Open House days runs S$2–10. The ornate golden gate facing Orchard Road is visible and photographable from the street at any time.
- Check Istana Open House dates before your trip — in 2026, dates fall around Chinese New Year, Labour Day, Eid, and National Day.
- Even without an Open House, the golden gate makes a worthwhile photo stop.
- Nearest MRT is Dhoby Ghaut.
#8 Orchard Heritage Trail
A self-guided walking route designed by the National Heritage Board, tracing Orchard Road from its days as a nutmeg plantation through to its shopping golden age. The trail passes Peranakan houses, the Eu Court building, and several sites with centuries of layered history. Interpretive panels at each stop do a solid job of telling the story. The full walk is free.
- Download the Heritage Trail map from the NHB website before you go.
- Best walked in the morning before the malls open — quieter streets, cooler air.
- Easy to combine with Emerald Hill in a single morning outing.
