Montreux is more than a lake view — it is where Alpine scenery, medieval history, and a serious music culture meet in one compact town. Chillon Castle, standing on a rocky promontory in the middle of Lake Geneva, is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe, while the Freddie Mercury statue on the waterfront says more about this town's relationship with Queen than any description could. Whether you want to stroll the lakeshore, ride a cog railway to a 2,042-metre summit, or simply sit with a coffee and stare at the Alps, Montreux has everything you need in a town exactly the right size.
#1 Château de Chillon
Switzerland's most-visited castle has stood on a rocky spit in Lake Geneva for over 1,000 years. Inside, 25 historic rooms await: a tower with 360-degree lake views, a great hall still bearing medieval frescoes, and the underground dungeon where the poet Byron carved his name into a pillar during an 1816 visit. The atmosphere holds up equally well in summer and winter.
- Book tickets online in advance at chillon.ch to skip the entrance queue in summer. Adult admission is CHF 14.50.
- Walk from Montreux along the Chemin Fleuri lakeside path — about 40-45 minutes — rather than taking a bus. The views along the way justify the detour.
- A valid Swiss Travel Pass gets you in free. Check whether yours covers the castle before buying a separate ticket.
#2 Montreux Lakeside Promenade
More than 4 kilometres of manicured lakefront stretch along Lake Geneva here, planted with flowers year-round and at their showiest in spring when daffodils, tulips, and magnolias bloom simultaneously. Outdoor cafés, waterside benches, and street musicians fill the promenade with easy energy. It is no accident that Byron, Tolstoy, and Hemingway all stayed in Montreux and wrote here. The same path leads directly to Chillon Castle if you keep walking south.
- Walk or rent an e-bike from the station forecourt outside Montreux train station. Rates are roughly CHF 5-8 per hour.
- Benches on the eastern side of the promenade face both the lake and the mountain range — sit for a while rather than rushing past.
- In December a Christmas market runs the full length of the promenade. The atmosphere is warm despite the cold air.
#3 Rochers de Naye
The MGN rack-and-pinion railway climbs from Montreux to the 2,042-metre Rochers de Naye summit in 55 minutes. The scenery shifts in layers — lake and vineyards first, then pine forest, then a snow-covered world at the top. On the summit: a restaurant, an Alpine flower garden, marmots wandering the rocks, and a 360-degree panorama taking in Lake Geneva, the French Alps, and Mont Blanc on a clear day.
- A return ticket is CHF 66 for adults. Swiss Travel Pass holders get 50% off — well worth it if you are using the pass throughout your trip.
- The summit is always 10-15 degrees cooler than the town. Bring a wind jacket even in summer.
- If the sky is overcast the panorama disappears completely. Check the forecast at meteoswiss.admin.ch before you go.
#4 Freddie Mercury Statue
A life-size bronze of Freddie Mercury — Queen's lead singer — stands with fist raised toward Lake Geneva. Erected in 1996 as a memorial to his connection with the town, it marks the years Freddie spent living in Montreux toward the end of his life and recording at the Mountain Studios nearby. The statue is the most photographed spot in the city, especially among music fans.
- The original Mountain Studios where Queen recorded are inside the Casino behind the statue — now open to visitors as Queen: The Studio Experience.
- Evening shots at dusk are far better than midday: the waterfront lights and the orange sky reflect off the bronze.
- During the Montreux Jazz Festival in July this entire stretch of the waterfront comes alive. Come in the early evening for the best energy.
#5 Lavaux Vineyard Terraces
Cistercian monks carved these vineyard terraces into the hillside over 900 years ago. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007 and stretches 30 kilometres along the northern shore of Lake Geneva from Montreux to Lausanne. Several walking trails weave through the vines — the Route du Vignoble is the most popular. In autumn the leaves turn gold and copper, and the views down to the lake and across to the Alps are exceptional.
- The Grandvaux-Cully trail takes 2-3 hours at an easy pace and suits all fitness levels. Domaines along the route offer tastings.
- The RegioExpress between Montreux and Lausanne runs along the base of the terraces — the view from the train window alone is worth the short journey.
- Harvest season runs September through October, when the vineyards are busiest. The nearby town of Vevey hosts the Fete des Vendanges festival around this time.
#6 Vevey and Alimentarium
Six kilometres from Montreux, Vevey is home to the Alimentarium — Nestlé's food museum, fitting since the company's global headquarters sit here. The town's most talked-about landmark is the 8-metre giant fork rising from the lake in front of the museum. The Tuesday and Saturday morning markets in the main square sell local Canton Vaud produce worth lingering over. Vevey was also Charlie Chaplin's home for the last 25 years of his life — the large Chaplin World museum is on the edge of town in Corsier-sur-Vevey.
- Chaplin World in Corsier-sur-Vevey is open daily, tickets are CHF 29 for adults, and a full visit takes 2-3 hours. Non-negotiable for Chaplin fans.
- The Saturday morning market at Grand Place runs 7 am-1 pm and sells cheese, charcuterie, local wine, and flowers.
- Take the CGN lake ferry from Montreux to Vevey (25 minutes) rather than the train — the lake views from the water are far better.

Before You Pack
Montreux is at its finest in spring (April-May) when flowers line the entire waterfront, and again in winter (December-January) when snow on the Alps turns the scene into something off a Christmas card. Plan at least 2-3 days to cover everything properly — including a day trip to Chillon Castle and a full morning on the Rochers de Naye railway.
