Lombok belongs to Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara archipelago and has held on to a rawness that its neighbour Bali largely lost. Blue-turquoise water, pink and white sand beaches, jungle waterfalls — plus a Sasak culture passed down across more than 15 generations — all wait for travelers who want Indonesia without the crowds. Getting here from Bali takes just 30 minutes by fast boat or 25 minutes by air.
#1 Gili Islands
The Gili Islands are three small islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno — widely regarded as having the clearest water in Indonesia. There are no cars or motorbikes; bicycles and horse-drawn carts are the only way to get around. Colourful coral and sea turtles swimming close to shore make this one of the best snorkel and dive destinations in Southeast Asia. Gili Trawangan is the liveliest, Gili Meno the most romantic, and Gili Air the best balance of the two.
- Gili Trawangan suits travelers who want beach bars and a social scene; Gili Meno is the one for couples looking for quiet.
- You can snorkel anywhere around the islands, but the east side of Gili Trawangan gives the best chance of spotting sea turtles.
- Slow boats from Bali take 2–3 hours and cost less; fast boats cover the crossing in 30–45 minutes.
#2 Mount Rinjani
Mount Rinjani stands at 3,726 metres — an active volcano and Indonesia's second-highest peak. The emerald-blue Segara Anak crater lake sits at 2,000 metres and is the goal that trekkers from around the world come to reach. The standard trail takes 3–4 days, passing open savannah, cloud forest, and far views of Bali on the horizon.
- Book a licensed local guide through the Rinjani Trek Centre — it's both safer and puts money directly into the community.
- The trail starts from either Senaru or Sembalun, depending on your fitness level and the distance you want to cover.
- Summit attempts require leaving camp at 2–3 am to reach the top before clouds close in; temperatures up there are cold.
#3 Tanjung Aan Beach
Tanjung Aan is a crescent-shaped bay with two different sand textures in the same beach: one section has fine, powder-soft grains, the other is made up of tiny round pellets that look like fish roe. The water is turquoise clear enough to see the bottom, and calm enough for swimming when the sea is flat. The rocky headlands around the bay offer the best panoramic views in South Lombok.
- Climb the rocky hill on the right side of the beach for an aerial-view shot of the full crescent bay.
- Waves can pick up in the afternoon — better for photos and relaxing than swimming later in the day.
- Seafood stalls and coconut vendors line the beach at reasonable prices.
#4 Pink Beach
Pink Beach (locally called Pantai Tangsi) is one of just 7 pink-sand beaches on earth. The colour comes from fragments of red coral mixed into the white sand — the stronger the waves wash in, the more vivid the pink. The sheltered bay is unusually calm, making it ideal for snorkelling close to shore, where coral gardens grow just metres from the waterline. Rolling green hills encircle the bay and add to the setting.
- The pink is most intense under full midday sun; morning and late afternoon light makes it look paler.
- Bring your own snorkel gear or hire it from nearby accommodation — the coral is close enough to reach without a boat.
- Parts of the access road are rough; an SUV or sturdy motorbike is the safer choice.
#5 Sendang Gile Waterfall
Sendang Gile is the most accessible of Lombok's waterfalls, sitting at 600 metres inside Rinjani National Park. The main drop is more than 30 metres into a pool of cool, emerald-green water. In Sasak, sendang gile means 'mad spring' — a nod to the raw force of the flow. From here, a further 45-minute walk uphill reaches Tiu Kelep waterfall, taller, quieter, and with far fewer visitors.
- Buy your ticket at the park entrance — around 5,000 rupiah, covering both waterfalls.
- Swimming in the lower pool is allowed; the water is cold and genuinely refreshing after the jungle walk.
- The trail up to Tiu Kelep takes 45 minutes and is steeper, but the views are worth it.
#6 Sade Traditional Village
Sade is a real, inhabited Sasak community — not a museum replica — that has been passed down across more than 15 generations, with around 700 residents today. Houses are built from bamboo with alang-alang grass roofs, and the floors are polished with cow dung following an ancient formula to repel insects. Women in the village learn to weave ikat and songket cloth from childhood — it is a skill they must master before marrying. In Sasak, sade means awareness and a sense of one's roots.
- Local volunteer guides will walk you through the village and explain the culture — tip them fairly.
- Buy woven textiles directly from the weavers in the village: you support the community and get the real thing.
- Do not photograph residents without asking first — a smile and a question go a long way.
#7 Senggigi Beach
Senggigi is Lombok's main tourism hub, stretching 10 kilometres along the coast with hotels, resorts, restaurants, and beach bars. The standout draw is the sunset view over Bali — on a clear day the silhouette of Agung is unmistakable. It also serves as the natural departure point for the Gili Islands and the clifftop temple route along the northern coastline.
- Watch the sunset from the rocky outcrops on the northern end of Senggigi for the clearest view of Bali across the strait.
- Rent a motorbike and ride north along the coast to Batu Bolong Temple — a Hindu temple built into the rocks above the sea.
- Accommodation and food in Senggigi run slightly higher than Kuta, but getting around is easier.
#8 Kuta Lombok / Mandalika
Kuta Lombok and the surrounding Mandalika Special Economic Zone are the focus of major government investment in Indonesian tourism. Mandalika Beach runs for 7.2 kilometres of fine white sand and turquoise water, with powerful breaks at several points that pull surfers from around the world. Five-star resorts and boutique hotels have opened steadily in recent years. The Mandalika International Street Circuit hosts the MotoGP.
- Seger Beach, just east of Mandalika, is the best surf spot for intermediate-to-advanced surfers.
- Sade Village is only 15 minutes from Kuta — easy to pair on the same day.
- Accommodation here covers every price point, from budget guesthouses to full luxury resorts.
