Lijiang (丽江), in the northwest of China's Yunnan province, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, thanks to its ancient network of canals and its Naxi-style architecture built with no city wall around it — a character you won't find anywhere else. The town is also the gateway to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which climbs to 5,596 metres, and to Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest canyons on Earth. For travelers with just 3-5 days, Lijiang is the kind of destination that hands you nature, history, and culture all in one place.
#1 Dayan Old Town (Lijiang Old Town)
The heart of Lijiang is Dayan Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. This town has no wall around it and was built over a tangled network of canals that run right past every carved wooden house. Sifang Square is the busiest hub, ringed with shops, cafes, and bars that stay open late. After dark, the red lanterns light up and reflect in the canal water — an image that stays with you for good.
- Wander the small side lanes off the main streets to dodge the crowds and find the real architecture.
- The old-town entry fee is around 80 yuan, which includes a conservation levy, collected on your first morning.
- Climb Lion Hill (Wangu Tower) early in the morning for a panorama of the old town and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
#2 Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) is a range of 13 snowy peaks, the highest of which, Shanzidou, rises to 5,596 metres and has never been summited by any climber. The cable car runs up to a high meadow at 4,506 metres for a close-up view of the glacier. Below sits Blue Moon Valley, an emerald-green lake fed by glacial meltwater — one of the most beautiful spots to photograph in all of Yunnan.
- Book the Glacier Park cable-car ticket online in advance — the quota is very limited and often sells out 2-3 days ahead.
- Bring a portable oxygen canister and a heavy jacket before you ride up; temperatures at the top can drop below -10°C.
- Blue Moon Valley is at its best in the morning sun, when the emerald-green water shows up most clearly.
#3 Black Dragon Pool (Jade Spring Park)
Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭), in Jade Spring Park, is one of Lijiang's most iconic photo spots. The natural spring is clear as a mirror and reflects the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain perfectly, while the white marble bridge that arches across the pool only adds to the scene. The park is also home to the Dongba Cultural Research Institute, a museum that preserves the ancient Naxi Dongba script — the only pictographic writing system in the world still in actual use.
- Come before 08:00 to beat the crowds and catch the clearest reflection of the snow mountain.
- Entry is free and it's open every day — a good stop before you head off to explore the old town.
- Inside the park stands Wufeng Tower (Five Phoenix Tower), built in the Ming dynasty — don't miss it.
#4 Tiger Leaping Gorge
Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡), on the Jinsha River — a headwater tributary of the Yangtze — is one of the deepest canyons in the world, dropping 3,790 metres from water to peak. The 22 km High Road trek passes a natural paradise of waterfalls, sweeping views, and guesthouses the whole way. The route is rated among the most beautiful treks in Asia, and legend has it a tiger once leapt across the rocks midstream where the river narrows to just 25 metres.
- The High Road takes 1-2 days to walk, with cheap guesthouses all along the way — no need to carry a tent.
- During the July-August rains some sections turn dangerous; April-June is the better window.
- Carry enough spare water and food — shops are far apart and mobile signal can drop out.
#5 Baisha Village
Baisha is the oldest Naxi settlement in Lijiang and the ancestral home of the Mu family, the region's former rulers. The main draw is the Baisha Murals in the Dabaoji Palace, over 600 years old and dating to the Ming dynasty, blending Tibetan Buddhist, Taoist, and Han art into one. More than 100 of these paintings still hold their colour remarkably well after several centuries. The village is far quieter than Dayan Old Town, which makes it ideal for anyone who wants to feel real Naxi culture.
- Entry to the murals in the Dabaoji Palace is 30 yuan, open every day.
- Stop by Dr. Ho's, a traditional herbal-medicine shop the doctor has run for more than 30 years — the shop has been featured in National Geographic.
- The village isn't crowded the way Dayan is; an easy morning stroll gives you the real rhythm of daily Naxi life.
#6 Shuhe Old Town
Shuhe is part of Lijiang's UNESCO World Heritage Site, sitting at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, 4 km from Dayan. The name 'Shuhe' means 'village at the foot of the peak' in the Naxi language. It was originally a merchant village on the ancient Tea Horse Road. The highlights are the Qinglong Bridge, a stone span over 400 years old, and the still-lively Sifang Street market. The town is quieter than Dayan and draws fewer travelers, which suits anyone after the genuine rhythm of daily life.
- Entry is free, unlike Dayan Old Town with its fee — good for an afternoon or evening stroll.
- Sifang Street in Shuhe has a morning market every day, selling local goods and regional fruit and vegetables.
- Cafes and guesthouses in Shuhe tend to run 20-30% cheaper than in Dayan, with a better atmosphere too.
#7 Lugu Lake
Lugu Lake (泸沽湖), at 2,685 metres above sea level, is the highest highland lake in Yunnan, its clear blue water ringed by villages of the Mosuo people — a matriarchal society where women hold authority and the old family system endures. Take a dugout canoe around the small islands, watch the rituals and folk music performances in the evening, and feel a way of life that has barely changed in centuries.
- It's a 5-7 hour drive from Lijiang; plan to stay at least 2 nights in Luoshui or Lige village.
- Sunrise at Lige village (a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides) is gorgeous — get up at 06:00.
- Respect Mosuo customs around photography; always ask permission first.
#8 Impression Lijiang Show
Impression Lijiang is a legendary open-air spectacle directed by Zhang Yimou, the man behind the 2008 Olympic opening ceremony. Staged on a vast ground at 3,100 metres on the slopes of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, it puts more than 500 performers from 10 ethnic minorities together with 100 horses to create a spectacle that mixes music, dance, and the snow mountain as a backdrop. The show comes in two parts: Snow Mountain Impression and Ancient City Impression.
- Buy tickets online in advance, around 190-260 yuan; the morning shows run at 09:00 and 11:00.
- Dress especially warm — temperatures at 3,100 metres can drop below 5-10°C even in summer.
- It's an open-air show, so heavy rain or bad weather can cancel it, with ticket refunds.
