Balaton is more than a lake — it is the soul of the Hungarian summer, drawing families and couples from across Central Europe every year. The water is warm and shallow, the local wine is genuinely good, and the scenery rivals the Mediterranean at a fraction of the price. The Tihany Peninsula jutting into the centre of the lake, the historic harbour town of Balatonfüred, and the Badacsony wine slopes gazing out over brilliant-blue water are the three stops no visitor should skip.
#1 Tihany Peninsula
The most scenic arm of land on Balaton stretches more than 5 kilometres into the lake, giving you an unbroken panorama of blue water on almost every side — something you simply cannot get anywhere else here. The old village of Tihany lines the hillside with white-washed houses, lavender shops and local craft stalls. The interior of the peninsula is a national park with an inner lake and calm lakeside walking trails, ideal for anyone who wants to escape the beach crowds.
- Park at the base of the peninsula and walk up to the village rather than driving in — the lanes are narrow and summer parking is nearly impossible.
- The loop trail around the inner lake Belsö-tó takes about 45 minutes; the views are excellent and far fewer people come this way than to the main lakeside cliffs.
- Tihany's lavender blooms in mid-June to July — a well-known photo highlight worth timing your visit around.
#2 Tihany Abbey
This Benedictine abbey was founded in 1055 and ranks among the most important Romanesque churches in Hungary. Inside lies the crypt of King Andrew I — the only royal tomb in Hungary that has remained in its original medieval position. The Baroque exterior seen today was rebuilt in the 18th century, but the grandeur is intact, and the view of Lake Balaton from the abbey courtyard is genuinely hard to leave.
- Admission is around 1,800–2,200 Hungarian forints and includes the Benedictine museum inside.
- The forecourt is free to enter — the view of the lake from here is one of the finest photo spots in all of Hungary.
- Benedictine monks still live and work here; dress modestly and keep your voice down inside the monastic areas.
#3 Balatonfüred
The most graceful harbour town on Lake Balaton has been a health resort since the 18th century. Mineral springs in the town centre dispense water free of charge. The lakeside Tagore Promenade — named after the Indian poet who came here to convalesce — blends old European elegance with modern cafés and ice-cream parlours. The harbour is also the departure point for passenger ferries to other towns around the lake.
- The Kossuth Forrás mineral spring in the town park is free to taste — the water is quite carbonated and mineral-forward, so one glass is plenty.
- The passenger ferry across the lake to Tihany and Badacsony is inexpensive and gives you the best views on the water; book through BalatonShip online.
- Jókai utca fills with local wine bars and restaurants in the evenings — look for menus listing wines from the Balatonfüred-Csopak appellation.
#4 Badacsony Hill
An ancient volcanic hill whose basalt soil now produces some of Hungary's finest white wines. The same lava-derived geology gives the local Olaszrizling and Szürkebarát (Grey Friar) grapes a distinctive mineral character found nowhere else in the country. Wineries on the slopes open for tastings and direct sales. The view from the top looking down over the lake is the best in the region, and the trail through the vineyards past the Kőkapu rock gate is a popular place for photos.
- Laposa Birtok and Szászi Birtok are small family wineries where you can drop in without a reservation — both open on weekday afternoons.
- The hike up to Kőkapu (Stone Gate) takes about 40 minutes from the train station; trainers are fine.
- Badacsony white wines cost 1,500–3,500 forints a bottle bought direct from the winery — roughly half the supermarket price.
#5 Keszthely Beach
The largest and most historically significant town on the western end of the lake has a wide free public beach with shallow, safe water — perfect for children. The Baroque Festetics Palace in the town centre is open to visitors, complete with a beautifully preserved historic library. Keszthely was also home to Central Europe's first agricultural education institution, and the atmosphere here is quieter and more laid-back than the busier north-shore towns.
- Városi Strand is the free public beach — different from the private paid strands (which are cleaner but charge an entry fee).
- Festetics Palace admission is around 3,500 forints; the Helikon Library inside is the highlight for anyone interested in history.
- The Saturday market in the town centre sells local produce, wine and crafts — worth a stop to pick up food before heading to the beach.
#6 Siófok
The liveliest resort town on Balaton sits on the south shore, where the water is shallower, wider and sandier than the north. Beaches run for several kilometres, backed by beach bars and live music. Siófok is a key transport hub — trains and ferries connect here to every town around the lake. There is a lively waterside market and a good range of fresh-fish restaurants. For travellers who want energy and a real nightlife scene, this is the place.
- There are several free public beaches, but the private strands offer better facilities and cleaner sand for around 1,000–1,500 forints entry.
- The BalatonShip ferry from Siófok to Tihany or Balatonfüred is an affordable and scenic way to explore the lake.
- Summer weekends are extremely busy — arriving on a weekday means calmer beaches and far easier parking.

Before You Pack
Balaton is at its best from June to August, when the weather is warm and the lake temperature is comfortable for swimming — though expect large crowds, especially on weekends. Plan for at least 3 to 4 days to cover Tihany, Balatonfüred and Badacsony properly.
