Klagenfurt may not ring a bell the way Vienna or Salzburg does, but this lakeside city hides something big. The Wörthersee is warmer than any other lake in Austria and stays swimmable all summer long. The old town is the most complete Italian-Renaissance quarter in the country, and the Minimundus park, which gathers the wonders of the world into a single space, is an experience you won't find anywhere else.
#1 Wörthersee
The warmest lake in Austria and the number-one summer destination for Viennese holidaymakers. The water hits 25-27 degrees in midsummer, so you can actually swim rather than just dip a toe in. The shoreline is lined with sandy beaches and public lawns, while the lakeside villages of Pörtschach and Velden carry a luxe resort feel on weekends. The season is short, though: before June or after September the lake goes quiet and the water turns too cold to swim.
- The best free public beach is at Strandbad Klagenfurt; entry runs about 5-7 euros and includes full facilities.
- Rent a bike and ride the 50 km lakeside route that loops the whole lake; the path is flat and suits all ages.
- July and August get very busy, so book a lakeside hotel at least 2-3 months ahead.
#2 Lindwurm Fountain
Klagenfurt's number-one symbol, more than 400 years old. Legend says this dragon once lived in the marsh the city now sits on, before a warrior brought it down. The dragon sculpture is carved from green tuff stone and weighs over 4 tonnes, making it one of the oldest public fountains in Austria. What's fascinating: the fossil skull of a woolly rhinoceros found nearby in 1335 is believed to have inspired the dragon legend.
- The best photo spot is the west side of the square, where the hero statue sits in the same frame as the dragon.
- The nearby Landesmuseum displays the real fossil rhinoceros skull that inspired the legend.
- It looks beautiful lit up at night, and the cafés around the square are an easy place to sit and watch the fountain.
#3 Minimundus
An open-air park that brings together more than 170 of the world's wonders at 1:25 scale — the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, Buckingham Palace, and striking temples from every corner of the globe. The craftsmanship is so detailed that each building's architecture is reproduced accurately. The park was founded in 1959, starting as a fundraiser among Austrian children across the country, and still draws over 250,000 visitors a year today. It suits every age, especially kids and families.
- Entry is 14-16 euros for adults and half price for children under 14; allow about 2-3 hours to walk through.
- It's open from April to October only and closed in the off-season, so check the schedule before you go.
- Between 9 and 11 in the morning there are fewer visitors, the light is lovely, and it's not yet too hot for photographing the models.
#4 Klagenfurt Cathedral
The most beautiful Baroque cathedral in Carinthia. It was originally built in the 16th century as a Protestant church before passing into Catholic hands. Inside, it's decorated with delicate frescoes, a marble altar, and natural light from tall arched windows that make it feel calm and grand at once. The cathedral is also notable as a church visited by the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann, who was born in Klagenfurt.
- Free to visit any time, but please dress modestly and stay quiet during Mass.
- The cathedral's antique pipe organ is one of the oldest still-playing instruments in Austria, and organ concerts are held occasionally in summer.
- The side bell tower offers a lovely view over the old town; ask the clergy about climbing it during opening hours.
#5 Alter Platz Old Town
The old square at the heart of Klagenfurt, surrounded by Renaissance buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries with a clear Italian influence — especially the arcades and inner courtyards known as Innenhöfe, hidden behind plain-looking house doors. The whole old town is car-free, perfect for strolling past genuine Austrian cafés, local cheese shops, and the morning market. The evenings bring live music on some days and a market in summer.
- Wander the hidden Innenhöfe courtyards behind the old house doors; most are open to the public during the day.
- Genuine Austrian cafés like Café Musil and Café Donat are the best seats on the square, with house-made cakes.
- The fresh market runs every morning Monday to Saturday near Benediktinerplatz, where local produce and cheese are best value.
#6 Landesmuseum Kärnten
Carinthia's state museum, covering the region's history from prehistoric times to the present. The key highlight is the woolly rhinoceros skull, over 400,000 years old, found nearby in 1335 and tied to the city's Lindwurm dragon legend. There are also Roman antiquities, Carinthian folk costumes, and an interesting Alpine natural-history section. It isn't large, but the quality is well above the price.
- Entry is about 8-10 euros for adults and free for children under 15; open daily 10:00-18:00.
- Ask for the English-language guide leaflet at the counter, as most labels are in German.
- The permanent exhibition on Roman history in the Carinthia region is well worth seeing, with real finds from local excavations.

Before You Pack
Klagenfurt is at its best from June to August, when the Wörthersee is warm enough to swim in and flowers bloom across the public parks. Plan at least 2-3 days to take in the old town, the lake and Minimundus properly, and leave time for an evening drive along the lakeshore.
