Kep isn't the kind of beach town with shopping malls or pub crawls — it's a quiet place by the sea where time slows down. Eating fresh crab dipped in Kampot pepper right by the water is the experience everyone who comes to Kep has to do. Paired with Kampot just 25 kilometres away, Kep works better as a base to rest for a couple of days than a place to rush through every sight.
#1 Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island)
A small island whose name means Rabbit Island in Khmer, just 30 minutes from shore by wooden boat. The white-sand beach is calm and quiet, with no jet skis or DJs — only simple camps by the water, small restaurants and hammocks. If you've had enough of Kep town and want real quiet, this island is the answer, though you'll have to accept that the facilities are minimal, with basic toilets and electricity.
- Boats leave the Kep pier every morning, around 5-7 USD per trip; wait until the boat fills up or charter the whole boat for 25-35 USD.
- You can stay overnight in a beachfront hut for 10-20 USD, but book ahead during high season.
- Boats don't run when the surf is rough; during the monsoon, June-October, check the weather before you plan.
#2 Kep National Park
Tropical rainforest on the hills just a few kilometres from the beach, with trails at several difficulty levels — from a 3-kilometre loop around the hill for beginners to a route up to the summit with views of the sea and distant islands. The air is decisively cooler than down by the water, making it good for anyone who wants exercise or early-morning birdwatching, though some stretches of trail aren't clearly marked, so come with water and a map.
- Enter the forest early, 6-8 a.m., when the air is cool and the birds are loudest; midday is hot and very humid.
- Entry is 2-3 USD, with trail maps available at the entrance gate; the Orange Track runs 8 km and is the most challenging.
- Watch for snakes in the rainy season; the trail is steep and slippery, so wear ankle boots and don't head downhill too fast.
#3 French Colonial Villas
Kep was once a seaside resort for the French and the Cambodian upper class in the colonial era. Hundreds of villas were built between 1900 and 1960, then abandoned during the Khmer Rouge years. Today many still await restoration, while some have become boutique hotels. Wandering the seafront road in the evening feels like walking through the ruins of a civilisation that's still alive, and photographers love it as a place to shoot.
- Walk in the evening, 4-6 p.m., when the soft golden light falls beautifully on the old walls and the air starts to cool.
- Some villas have reopened as places to stay or cafes — Knai Bang Chatt is the most beautifully restored boutique villa in Kep.
- Don't enter the still-derelict villas without permission; the structure of some isn't safe.
#4 Day Trip to Kampot
Kep and Kampot are often paired in a single trip because they're so close. Kampot has a prettier riverside colonial atmosphere, with more cafes, bars and restaurants, and it's the source of the world-famous Kampot pepper. It's easy to reach by tuk-tuk or rented motorbike, taking 30-40 minutes. If you're staying in Kep but want something to do at night, Kampot is the better option.
- Rent a motorbike in Kep for 8-12 USD a day; riding to Kampot yourself is more fun and more flexible.
- Kampot pepper farms welcome visitors for free or a small fee; call ahead to book or ask your accommodation to arrange it.
- Kampot has a wider range of places to stay and is cheaper than Kep; on a tight budget you could stay in Kampot and drive or charter a tuk-tuk to Kep just for the crab.

Before You Pack
Kep is at its loveliest in the dry season, November-April, with clear skies, a calm sea, and boats to Koh Tonsay every day. During the monsoon, May-October, the surf is rough and the boats stop running. Plan at least 2 nights so you can combine the trip with Kampot on the same day.
