Hue is Vietnam's old capital — still breathing. The Imperial Palace, the royal tombs, and Thiên Mụ Pagoda line the banks of the 80-km Perfume River, named for the scent of wildflowers that drift downstream from the hills. This is a city where royal court history stays tangible from first light until the sun drops behind the Truong Son range.
#1 Imperial City of Huế
Built in 1804 by Emperor Gia Long after the model of Beijing's Forbidden City, the complex is enclosed by a 2×2 km wall and a surrounding moat. Inside sit the Imperial Enclosure (Hoàng Thành) and the Purple Forbidden City (Tử Cấm Thành), once off-limits to all but the emperor's household. More than half the site has been restored since large parts were destroyed during the 1968 Tet Offensive.
- Enter through the Ngo Mon Gate on the south side — the most ornate of the four gates
- Arriving before 8 a.m. means far fewer visitors and dramatically better light
- Royal court costumes are available to hire for photos inside the grounds at around 50,000 dong
#2 Thiên Mụ Pagoda
The oldest pagoda in Hue, founded in 1601 by lord Nguyen Hoang. The red seven-storey Phuoc Duyen tower — added in 1844 — has become the city's unofficial emblem. The pagoda also preserves the Austin car that the monk Thích Quảng Đức drove to Saigon before his self-immolation protest against the government in 1963.
- Come by boat from town rather than road — the river approach is far more atmospheric
- Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered; this is an active place of worship
- A tea stall outside the gate sells local flower tea by the cup for very little
#3 Tomb of Khải Định
The mausoleum of Khai Dinh, the 12th emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, took 11 years to build (1920–1931). The style layers Baroque, Gothic, neo-classical, and Vietnamese elements into something entirely its own. Smallest of the imperial tombs but the most ornate — the walls of the Thien Dinh Palace are encrusted with millions of pieces of ceramic and coloured glass.
- Climb the multiple staircase tiers for views over the surrounding pine forest
- A combined ticket covering 3 tombs (Khai Dinh, Tu Duc, Minh Mang) costs less than buying separately
- Midday actually has fewer visitors than morning, since tour groups tend to arrive early
#4 Tomb of Tự Đức
Built between 1864 and 1867 for Emperor Tu Duc — the longest-reigning ruler of the Nguyen dynasty (1848–1883) — this complex feels less like a mausoleum and more like a poet's garden retreat. Lotus ponds, waterside pavilions, and a small island where the emperor once hunted partridges. Strangely, Tu Duc was not buried here; the true location of his remains remains a secret to this day.
- An early arrival gets you the stillness before other visitors arrive
- The most romantic of the Hue tombs — the lotus pond makes for excellent photos
- The stele inscription left by Tu Duc within the complex is the largest in Vietnam
#5 Tomb of Minh Mạng
Built for the most powerful emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, Minh Mang's tomb was designed according to strict feng shui principles and constructed between 1840 and 1843 across 18 hectares. The 40 structures inside align along a central axis that reflects the three elemental forces — sky, earth, and water. The main gate to the burial chamber opens just once a year, on the anniversary of the emperor's death.
- Walk the full length of the central axis first before branching off to explore
- The lotus ponds within the grounds are at their best in spring
- Covered by the 3-tomb combined ticket for Hue
#6 Perfume River Boat Cruise
The Perfume River runs 80 km through the heart of Hue, named for the scent of wildflowers carried downstream from the Truong Son mountains. Dragon boats — once reserved exclusively for the emperor — carry visitors past Thiên Mụ Pagoda and the royal tombs. Evening cruises include live performances of Nhã nhạc, the traditional Hue court music (Ca Huế) that is itself a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
- The main departure point is Toa Kham Boat Station near Truong Tien Bridge
- Morning trips cover Thiên Mụ Pagoda and the tombs; evening trips offer sunset views and Ca Huế music
- Negotiate the price before boarding — standard rates run 200,000–350,000 dong per person depending on route
#7 Đông Ba Market
A market with over 100 years of history, rebuilt in 1899 on the orders of Emperor Thanh Thai. At 47,614 square metres across three floors, the ground level handles fresh produce, spices, and wet goods; the upper floors sell silk, the finely embroidered conical poetry hats (<em>nón lá bài thơ</em>), and Hue souvenirs. This is where residents actually shop — it runs seven days a week.
- Arrive before 8 a.m. to see the market at full momentum and find the best fresh produce
- Hue's poetry conical hats (<em>nón lá bài thơ</em>) have verses embedded inside that appear when held up to the light — one of the best gifts to bring home
- Level 2 has stalls selling <em>tôm chua</em>, Hue's famed fermented shrimp — worth picking up
#8 Hồ Thủy Tiên Abandoned Water Park
Opened in 2004 with a budget of 70 billion dong, the park closed not long after and was left to decay for years. The centrepiece — a three-storey dragon rising from the main pool, with an aquarium built inside — became one of the most photographed pieces of urban decay in Southeast Asia. The city municipality has since bought the site back and is converting it into a community park, though the distinctive atmosphere remains.
- Check current access status before visiting — renovation works are ongoing
- Early morning gives the best light for photography and the fewest other visitors
- Wear closed-toe shoes and watch your footing on uneven surfaces in the older sections
