In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
What hooked us the moment the door opened was the central stone courtyard, set with a model wooden waterwheel in the Naxi village style and pots of camellia and plum trees in the corners. Our room ran about 28 sqm, furnished throughout with handcrafted teak beds and cabinets, hand-embroidered Dongba linens, and bare plaster walls mixed with wood — rustic Europe meeting Asia, and it works. The bathroom has a brass tub, Yunnan herbal soap, and hot water that comes through fast. At 5 a.m., when the mist drifts into the courtyard, it is good enough that we could not stop taking photos.
Food and amenities
The guesthouse holds only about 14 rooms, which makes the service feel close. Breakfast goes out in the courtyard — fried eggs, local baba Naxi flatbread, millet porridge, and hot Pu'er tea. Private 5G Wi-Fi per room never dropped on us. The team runs small cultural sessions: learning to write Naxi script (the only pictographic language still in everyday use), a Pu'er tea class, and an early-morning market walk. Each one adds only about $7 to $14 — far better value than booking a tour outside.
Location and getting there
The location lands well for anyone who wants to stay inside the old town but dodge the crowds. Wenming Lane sits in Wenming Village, a pocket most Chinese tour groups never quite reach. From the guesthouse it is about 8 minutes on foot to Sifang Square in the center of the old town, another 5 to the Mu Palace, and 15 more to the Black Dragon Pool where the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflects in the water. The Three-Eye Well — three ancient Naxi pools — is just 30 metres from the head of the lane. At night the lane goes completely silent.
Things to know before booking
This is a small guesthouse, so expect boutique-level amenities rather than full hotel facilities — no pool, no gym. The entrance is on a lane in the old town, and the stone paths can be hard to find the first time, so save the coordinates and a photo before you go. One more thing to note: it replaces a former number 2 entry that no longer has a working Trip.com page.
Our take
Zhiyun Mansion Lijiang is the dream guesthouse for couples, honeymooners, or deeper travelers who want to sleep in a real Naxi home without giving up comfort. We score it 9.8 and place it at number 2 with full confidence — the price against the quality is better than you would expect. Book at least 3 weeks ahead and ask for a courtyard room when you reserve. You will come back.
