In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The first thing you feel stepping out of the car at White Sands is the sense of having left the city behind — even though you've only driven about 40 minutes from central Dar es Salaam. The open-sided lobby has a classic African-style roof, and the sea breeze runs through it so steadily you barely need the air-con. Stone paths wind through a tropical garden lined with tall coconut palms, bright flowering shrubs and birdsong in the background. The 100 rooms are spread out so nothing feels crowded — some in two- and three-storey blocks by the beach, others as standalone garden cottages tucked into the greenery. Interiors lean contemporary African: warm earth-toned browns and oranges, tribal-print curtains, teak furniture and walls dressed with local craftwork. Every room has a balcony or terrace opening onto the garden or the Indian Ocean, and if you land a beachfront room, you'll wake to the rhythm of the surf — better than any alarm clock.
Food and amenities
The heart of White Sands is its private white-sand beach, running along the Jangwani coast — fine pale sand against the deep-blue water of the Indian Ocean, postcard stuff. At low tide you can walk a long stretch without crowding anyone, and at high tide the swimming is easy because the surf stays gentle. Canvas sunbeds and umbrellas are spaced out along the sand for reading in the breeze. If you prefer a pool to the sea, there's a clearly separated adult pool and kids' pool with loungers and a pool bar serving cold drinks. The standout, and the number-one draw, is Water World, a small water park right beside the resort — a few minutes' walk from your room. Inside there are slides of various sizes for both small kids and braver swimmers, a lazy river to float around, a knee-deep kids' pool and a splash zone. Children genuinely play here all day without getting bored. There's also a spa for African-style massage treatments, a beachfront restaurant serving both international food and local Tanzanian dishes, and a conference centre for mid-size meetings.
Location and getting there
White Sands is on Jangwani Beach, north of Dar es Salaam, about 24 km from the city centre — a 40-minute drive when traffic is light, closer to an hour at rush hour. From Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) it's around 35 km, about a 45-minute drive. Not the closest spot in the city, but worth it to stay right on a white-sand beach instead of a downtown tower with heavy traffic and noise. Jangwani itself is a growing beach-resort area, with several hotels and beachfront restaurants to wander between. Getting into town is easy with a resort car or a taxi from the lobby, at around $25 to $30 each way. If you want to see Kariakoo market, the National Museum or the old port, a half-day round trip is comfortable. And if you're planning to catch the ferry to Zanzibar, the terminal is in the city centre, about a 45-minute drive — stay here two or three nights, then carry on by boat. It's a great way to start a Tanzania trip with an easy stretch of beach before heading into safari or the islands.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. The first thing many reviews raise is the distance from the city centre. If you plan to be in Dar es Salaam every day, shopping the markets and seeing museums, this won't be as convenient as a hotel in town — you'll lose hours each day to the round trip, plus the fares add up. If sightseeing in the city is your main goal, pick somewhere central instead. Second, some rooms in the main building are starting to age; furniture and bathrooms look due for a refresh, a few reviews mention uneven tap-water pressure, some showers are slow to warm up, and some linens are old — when booking, ask for a recently renovated room or a garden cottage, which tend to look newer. Third, Wi-Fi and mobile signal can be unreliable in some spots, especially the cottages deep in the garden — if you need to work online during your stay, check with reception about your room's location, or pick up a local Vodacom or Airtel SIM as backup. Last, Water World on weekends fills up with outside visitors coming just for the water park, so it can get crowded and kids may queue longer for the slides. For a calmer time, come on a weekday or in the morning before 11am.
Our take
After reading hundreds of real reviews across Agoda, Booking and TripAdvisor, White Sands Resort & Conference Centre is a beach resort that delivers for families who want the kids in the water all day, and it does it on a budget you can actually justify — an on-site water park, a private white-sand beach, a kids' pool and wide, safe garden space to run around. Starting at around $89 a night, it's strong value for a 4-star on the beach in this region. If your idea of the trip is parents sipping coffee by the sand while the kids splash and shriek, then closing the day with dinner by the water, this is about as well-matched as it gets. It also works for people coming to meetings who want to mix work with downtime, thanks to the conference centre. But if you're a solo luxury traveller or a couple after top-tier 5-star service and total quiet, White Sands may not measure up to a small resort out on Zanzibar. We give it 7.9/10 — best for families with kids, groups of friends, and business travellers who want a good-value beach resort near Dar es Salaam.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- A long private white-sand beach with deep-blue Indian Ocean views. Plenty of reviews note that at low tide you can walk a long stretch of sand without anyone crowding in.
- Water World sits right beside the resort, with slides of various sizes, a kids' pool and a lazy river. It's the number-one selling point for families, whether the kids are toddlers or teenagers.
- All 100 rooms are spread across a wide tropical garden, and some are standalone garden cottages that feel as private as a villa.
- Rates start around $89 a night, which is real value for a 4-star beach resort in a region where hotels of this level usually cost far more.
- There's a conference centre for mid-size meetings, which makes it a popular pick for companies and international organisations running events in Tanzania.
- It sits on the northern side of Dar es Salaam, about 24 km from the city centre — a 40-minute drive that can stretch close to an hour in traffic. If you want to be in town every day, it won't feel convenient.
- Some rooms in the main building are starting to age, with furniture and bathrooms due for a refresh. A few reviews mention the tap water pressure being uneven.
- Wi-Fi and mobile signal can be patchy in some rooms, especially the cottages set deep in the garden. If you need to work online, check with reception about your room's location first.

Insider Tips
- Ask for a standalone garden cottage if you want maximum privacy — but if you need steadier Wi-Fi, pick a room in the main building near the lobby instead.
- Hit Water World in the morning before 11am, when it's quieter and the kids can play without queuing for the slides.
- Budget around $25 to $30 each way for a resort car or taxi into Dar es Salaam. Driving yourself is easy to get lost on because signage is poor, so use the hotel's car.
