Picture a concrete silo rising over the harbour — built in the 1920s to grade and store maize from across southern Africa, once the tallest building on this side of the continent. That's the starting point of The Silo Hotel. Thomas Heatherwick's studio took the original 42 concrete grain tubes and carved them into 28 vaulted rooms and suites stacked on top, opening in 2017. The detail everyone photographs is the pillowed glass window — diamond-faceted panes that bulge outward like cut gemstones, hauling full views of Table Mountain, the V&A harbour and the Atlantic straight into your room. Interiors are by Liz Biden: hand-picked furniture, bold patterned textiles and contemporary African art, no two rooms alike. Ceilings are tall, walls curve along the original silo geometry, and the whole thing feels like sleeping inside a piece of art with a mountain on the other side of the glass.

The heart of a stay here is the rooftop — an infinity pool and bar with 360-degree views over Table Mountain, the harbour and the Atlantic horizon. Third, the design — Liz Biden's saturated, layered look is distinctive and many guests love it, but it's not minimalist. If your taste runs to calm neutrals, it can read as busy.
