In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Dorchester opened in 1931 as the first hotel in England built in reinforced concrete rather than brick — a structural choice that let them build rooms that are both large and quiet from the street outside. The Art Deco building has been renovated continuously across its 90 years, with gold, silk and crystal inside. Standard rooms start at 35 sqm, bigger than most of London's other heritage hotels, fitted with handmade Sealy beds, Italian Frette linens and marble bathrooms throughout. The Park-View rooms are the reason to come: one guest review put it simply — wake up, open the curtains, and Hyde Park is your backdrop, something no other hotel here can match. The Harlequin Suite and Dorchester Suite add private terraces over the park.
Food and amenities
This is where The Dorchester pulls ahead. Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester holds 3 Michelin stars, one of just three UK restaurants at that level, with the Table Lumiere under a dome of crystal lights as the hardest seat to book. Down on the lower ground, China Tang serves 1-Michelin-star Cantonese food in an Art Deco room dressed like 1930s Shanghai. The Grill on the Promenade does classic British plates, and Bar 1931 is a speakeasy-style cocktail room. The Promenade itself runs the afternoon tea, with a live harp. The Dorchester Spa covers 12,000 sq ft using Carol Joy London products, with a Hammam, sauna and a couples-treatment Spa Suite. Butler service runs 24 hours, backed by a Diamond-level Les Clefs d'Or concierge.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits on Park Lane, right against Hyde Park, a 5-minute walk from Hyde Park Corner Tube on the Piccadilly line — which runs direct to Heathrow. Buckingham Palace is about 10 minutes on foot through Green Park, and Knightsbridge and Harrods are another 10 minutes, so you reach both Mayfair and Knightsbridge easily. The Heathrow Express via Paddington takes about 30 minutes, and the hotel runs a chauffeur service.
Things to know before booking
Rooms start around $910 a night — this is firmly the luxury heritage tier. Park Lane traffic is heavy, and the noise reaches lower-floor rooms, so ask for floor 5 or above. The bigger limitation is the lack of a pool: the spa has a Hammam, sauna and steam room but nothing to swim in, which is a real gap compared with the Mandarin Oriental or Shangri-La.
Our take
Pick The Dorchester for the Hyde Park view and the food. With Alain Ducasse at 3 stars, China Tang at 1, and rooms larger than the heritage competition, it earns its 9.1/10. Just go in knowing there is no pool, and book a high Park-View floor.
