In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Sugar Beach Mauritius is a 5-star resort whose calling card is its white plantation-colonial architecture, set on Flic en Flac beach on the island's west coast. The layout is styled after an old Mauritian sugar estate: a central Manor House tower with villas arranged around it, so the whole place reads like a colonial-era plantation. Rooms carry that through in a tropical-colonial style, finished in wood and warm tones.
Food and amenities
The standout dinner spot is Tides Restaurant, right on the beach — and at sunset it has the best view on the property, which is the obvious place to book a table. Beyond that there's a spa and a pool to round things out.
Location and getting there
The west-coast position is what makes Sugar Beach different: you watch the sun set over the water every evening, where the east-coast resorts get the sunrise instead. This is also the nature side of the island — Casela World of Adventures is about a 15-minute drive, Black River Gorges National Park around 30 minutes, and the Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel roughly an hour away. The trade-off is the airport run: SSR is about 1.5 hours by road.
Things to know before booking
The water on the west coast isn't as clear as it is on the east side, so go in knowing that. It can also get windy at times during storm season, January through March. On the upside, rates here run lower than the comparable east-coast resorts, so it lands as better value.
Our take
Sugar Beach is best for couples who want a romantic plantation-colonial setting, a sunset to close out every evening, and easy reach to the west-coast nature spots. If a sunrise view or the clearer east-coast water matters more to you, look elsewhere — but for the look and the sunsets, it delivers.
