Inside, the building was fully reworked into 159 rooms and suites, and nearly every one opens onto a wide view of Panama Bay with a small private balcony you can step onto for the sea breeze all day. The look plays on the cream-and-pale-blue palette of a French seaside hotel, but threads in Panamanian detail smartly — woven Embera rattan, contemporary textiles, and work by younger Panamanian artists on the walls. The original ceilings, roughly 3.5 metres high, make the rooms feel far airier than most new builds. King beds use Sofitel's signature MyBed, marble baths with a separate tub and shower are standard, and the toiletries are Fragonard from Grasse. Open the curtains your first morning and the Punta Pacifica skyline catches the gold light across the bay — a view several reviews call worth the whole night's rate on its own.

Food and amenities

The hotel pairs Panamanian ingredients with French technique in its main kitchen, and the other draws are the Sofitel SPA, a pool beside the building, a rooftop bar over the bay, a restored historic ballroom for events, and butler service in the suites. Step outside and Casco Viejo is a battleground for the city's best chefs — Fonda Lo Que Hay, a 5-minute walk, made the Latin American Top 50 with semi-street Panamanian plates; Santa Rita, 6 minutes off, is a Spanish-Argentine steakhouse; CascoMar does Mediterranean tapas and fresh seafood 4 minutes away; and the contemporary Panamanian rooms Donde Jose? and Maito are nearby. For a drink, Casa Casco's rooftop has 360-degree views and Pedro Mandinga Rum Bar distills its rum in the quarter itself.

Location and getting there

The trump card here is the location. The hotel stands on the tip of Casco Viejo, at the heart of the UNESCO old town. Walk a few steps out of the lobby and you are on the cobbled lanes of the Spanish quarter founded in 1673, where the street plan and colonial architecture survive almost intact. Within a 5-minute walk you reach Plaza Independencia beside the Catedral Metropolitana, Panama's largest church; Plaza Francia at the Las Bovedas point, a favorite Pacific-side sunset spot; and the Iglesia de San Jose, famous for its Altar de Oro said to have survived the pirate Henry Morgan. As for getting around — Tocumen airport (PTY) is about 30 to 40 minutes by Uber or taxi, the Frank Gehry Biomuseo on the Amador causeway is roughly 10 minutes by car, and the 5 de Mayo metro station on Line L1 is about 10 minutes by car for the Bella Vista financial district or the malls.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to help you decide. First, price: as the first 5-star in the quarter, the Sofitel runs nearly double the other Casco Viejo boutiques, starting around $470 a night and climbing to about $915 for a corner bay-view room or suite. On a tight budget you will find other historic-building boutiques here at half the rate, just not this spec or this point location. Second, it opened in late 2025, so mobile check-in, in-house restaurant booking, spa class schedules and the odd special request are not fully sorted, and some early reviews hit delays in peak season. Third, noise — Casco Viejo is a busy quarter, with rooftop bars and restaurants open late; if you sleep lightly, ask for a bay-facing room over a lane-facing one. Finally, safety: the streets around the hotel are patrolled and fine, but if you walk well out of the quarter, especially west toward El Chorrillo, take a car instead.

After reading through real reviews and comparing the spec against other luxury hotels across Panama City, Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo is a genuine step forward for the city's high end — the first time Casco Viejo has a Legend-tier 5-star that restores a historic building carefully and brings full Sofitel service with it. The picture that fits this hotel is a couple or a luxury traveler who wants to open the curtains to Panama Bay, step out into the 1673 Spanish lanes, spend the day on churches, plazas and contemporary Panamanian tables, then soak in the spa before a rooftop cocktail at sunset. If that is the trip, this nails it. If your budget is tight and an officially 5-star rating is not the point, Casco Viejo has lighter-priced historic boutiques too. Overall we give it 9.4/10, best for honeymooners, luxury travelers, and anyone who values staying in a historic building with a story over a new tower in the financial district.
