Food and amenities

This is all-inclusive done seriously — 11 restaurants spread across the resort, free at every meal all week. The highlights are Kimonos, where the chef cooks teppanyaki at your table; Gordon's on the Pier, a steakhouse out over the water with a 270-degree view; La Toc for French fine dining; Bayside for a beachfront international buffet; plus Mario's Italian, a sushi bar, and the Bombay Club for Indian. Drinks and cocktails are unlimited, including wine, cava and premium spirits, across 7 bars — one a swim-up bar in the main pool. The facilities are stacked: 4 pools (a sea-view infinity pool, a quiet adults pool, and swim-up rooms), the Red Lane Spa that reviewers call genuinely relaxing, a 24-hour gym, the oceanfront wedding chapel, and a watersports center covering snorkeling, kayaks, paddleboards, windsurfing, catamarans and free scuba for certified divers. It is all in the price.

Location and getting there

The setting is the real draw, on the Pigeon Island Causeway built in the 1970s to connect the mainland to Pigeon Island — now a national landmark with colonial-era fort ruins and the best 360-degree view of Rodney Bay on the island. The point where the two beaches meet is the photo every guest walks out to capture, and you can stroll up to the fort, with a complimentary Sandals tour included. Rodney Bay, packed with local restaurants, bars and nightlife, sits a 5-to-10-minute drive away, while the capital, Castries, with its market and cruise port, is about 14 km south, roughly 30 minutes. There are two airports: Hewanorra International (UVF) at the far south takes long-haul flights and is a 1.5-hour drive across scenic mountain roads, or George F. L. Charles (SLU), the small airport near Castries, is closer at around 15 minutes but handles only domestic and regional flights. Some couples take a small hop-over from UVF to cut the drive.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to help you decide. The most common complaint is the transfer from UVF — a 1.5-hour drive on winding mountain roads. Bring motion-sickness tablets if you are prone, and note a late flight can land you at the resort near midnight. The fix is a small hop-over from UVF to SLU, closer but an extra US$200 to US$300 per couple. Second is the total cost: all-inclusive looks like value, but gratuities for butlers and some staff, plus spa treatments and off-resort tours, are not in the package — budget another 10 to 15 percent of the room rate. Third, the entry-level Luxury rooms in the Royal Section draw notes that the decor looks dated, the rooms are not large, and some noise carries from next door. For the brochure experience, upgrade to a Honeymoon Butler Suite or above with a private plunge pool. Finally, the popular restaurants — Kimonos and Gordon's especially — must be booked the day you check in, or you may miss seats over the December-to-April high season.

If your mental image is a honeymoon or anniversary where you wake to a postcard Pigeon Island view, drop into a swim-up pool, sip a cocktail with no bill to sign, take steak at Gordon's over the water, then soak in a private balcony plunge pool, this is close to perfect. If you came to Saint Lucia to hike the Pitons rainforest every day, or you expect strong value per square metre in the entry-level rooms, there are better-matched options. Overall we give it 9.0/10, best for honeymooners and celebration travelers who want to close out a trip without thinking about daily money — book a Butler Suite or above, reserve the popular restaurants on day one, and you will leave with a Saint Lucia memory that is hard to forget.
