Reaching town in winter means relying on a car or the limited Postbus; if you plan to head into town often or come back late, a rental car is far more convenient. The second point is the rooms: because this is a 4-star design hotel, some types, especially the entry rates and the bunk-bed family rooms, are fairly compact, so anyone wanting more space should look closely at room categories. View matters too — rooms that do not face the lake look out on more ordinary mountainside, so if you want the full lake outlook, ask clearly for a Lake View room when booking rather than leaving it to chance.

From reading through a lot of real reviews, Nira Alpina is a design hotel that hits its target audience squarely — the cable-car-side location with a few steps to ski-in up Corvatsch, the warm modern Design Hotels styling, the lovely Lake Silvaplana views, and value that is easier to reach than the old grand luxury hotels in town. If the trip in your head is skiing hard, riding up the cable car first thing, coming back to soak in an outdoor hot tub watching the snow, then closing the night with a drink on the 360-degree rooftop bar, this is the well-judged and very good-value pick. You just have to accept the out-of-town setting and quieter nights than central St. Moritz.
