In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
There are two main choices: the Mandapa Suite in the main building, and the Pool Villa as a separate private unit. Both are dressed in Bali stone, natural teak and hand-woven batik. The pool villas run roughly 300 to 500 sqm, each with a private pool looking out over the green of the jungle and river, plus an open-air rain shower that several reviewers said they would never forget. The suites in the main building keep a private balcony and a marble bathroom at a price that is easier to reach.
Food and amenities
The restaurant Kubu sits inside a bamboo cocoon down in the valley, serving Balinese-European fine dining in the open air over a small waterfall — TripAdvisor reviewers have called it "one of the best meals in Bali." The spa is on the Lotus Pond, with a treatment room right by the river using Balinese herbs and natural essential oils. Free guest activities include morning yoga, making Canang Sari offerings, Balinese cooking and guided rice-field walks.
Location and getting there
Mandapa is in the Kedewatan area, about 5 km from central Ubud, with a free shuttle into town every hour. From Denpasar airport the drive is around 1 hour 15 minutes. Reaching the Sacred Monkey Forest or the Ubud Art Market means relying on a car, but the resort is built so you can happily spend the whole day on-site without leaving.
Things to know before booking
This is the priciest pick on the list, from about $1,570 a night up past $6,000 for the largest villas. You will lean on the shuttle or a car to get into town. And while there is a Kids Club and family activities, the atmosphere is built around romance, so it lands best for couples.
Our take
The resort sits on 6 hectares on a cliff above the Ayung, with running water and forest birds as the soundtrack all day, a private temple, vegetable garden and small streams threading between the villas. The first thing guests mention in reviews is the personal host waiting at the lobby with cold herbal water. Mandapa suits honeymooners and travelers chasing the highest tier of luxury in Bali — the price is steep, but it comes back as service and an experience that is hard to match.
