In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Deluxe Double runs about 18 sqm at roughly $21 a night, dressed in a warm Vietnamese Indochine palette of brown, cream and red. You get a Queen bed (160x200 cm), a desk and chair, a 32-inch TV, a minibar and a fridge. The air-con cools fine and the Wi-Fi runs 75 Mbps. The en-suite bathroom has a strong hot shower and Cocoon toiletries — a Vietnamese organic brand — plus cotton towels. A big window looks out over Pham Ngu Lao street, bright on a sunny day. Mr. Long handles check-in himself in about 5 minutes, playing owner, guide and food-tip dispenser all at once, while Mrs. Hoa works the kitchen.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is the heart of the place. From 06:30 to 09:30, Mrs. Hoa makes phở bò at home — broth simmered 8 hours with real whole spices (star anise, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, ginger) and thin, tender beef. It tastes like eating in a Vietnamese family's house, and it comes with bánh mì, Vietnamese drip coffee and mixed fruit, all free and unlimited. Around 09:00, if you have booked 2 nights or more, Mr. Long leads a free 2-hour walking tour through Pham Ngu Lao Park, Ben Thanh Market, the Bia Hoi corner and Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, narrating the city's history like an official guide. Stay long enough and Mrs. Hoa will also run a free phở bò cooking class in her kitchen.
Location and getting there
You are in central District 1, a 3-minute walk from Bui Vien Walking Street and about 10 minutes on foot from Ben Thanh Market. Through Mr. Long you can book the Cu Chi Tunnels half-day for about $15 per person, with a private car for the 70 km trip out of Saigon — at the tunnels you crawl part of a 250 km underground network the Viet Cong used during the Vietnam War (1954-1975), dropping roughly 50 m into passages so dark and narrow you have to crouch.
Things to know before booking
This is a guesthouse, not a hostel, so there are no dorm beds and the price reflects it — about $19 a night for a private double versus roughly $10 for a dorm bed elsewhere in the district. Rooms are compact, starting near 14 sqm, which suits a couple but feels tight with big bags. There is no rooftop and no in-house bar, so late-night drinks mean walking the 3 minutes to Bui Vien. Ask for an upper-floor room to dodge some of the street noise.
Our take
Local Home Pham Ngu Lao is the warmest stay in this group — family-run by Mr. Long and Mrs. Hoa, with an authentic Vietnamese feel, a home-cooked breakfast and a free walking tour, scoring 8.7/10 across 800+ reviews. At around $19 and up it is great value for couples, solo women and anyone who wants the feel of a real Vietnamese home over a party hostel. It is more a local family's house you get to sleep in than a backpacker bunkhouse.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- Genuinely warm, hands-on service — Mr. Long and Mrs. Hoa run the entire guesthouse themselves rather than hiring a front desk.
- Both owners speak great English and recommend food and sights like a private guide, not a clerk reading off a sheet.
- Private rooms only, no dorms, which keeps the place quiet and secure — a solid choice for solo women travelling alone.
- Free local Vietnamese breakfast every morning from 06:30 to 09:30 — phở bò, bánh mì and Vietnamese drip coffee, all cooked by Mrs. Hoa.
- Stay 2 nights or more and Mr. Long throws in a free 2-hour walking tour covering Pham Ngu Lao Park, Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral.
- No dorms here, so it is pricier than a backpacker hostel — figure around $19 a night for a private double versus roughly $10 for a dorm bed nearby.
- Rooms are on the small side, starting at about 14 sqm — fine for a couple, tight if you have a lot of luggage.
- There is no rooftop and no in-house bar, so for late-night drinks you walk the 3 minutes to Bui Vien instead.
