In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Kurumba sits on the island of Vihamanafushi, close to the capital Male, and it carries real history — this was the first resort in the Maldives, open since 1972. The name comes from the Dhivehi word for young coconut, and the island genuinely sits under a canopy of palms. There are 180 rooms here, running from Deluxe Bungalows up through Pool Villas and Family Villas to the top-end Royal Kurumba Residence. Worth flagging up front: Trip.com now lists the property as Niva Kurumba Maldives, which is a rebrand of the same resort rather than a new place.
Food and amenities
The part we keep coming back to is the food. Kurumba runs 9 restaurants and bars across a real mix of nationalities — seafood, Chinese, Italian, Indian and Japanese — the most of any resort on our list. Beyond eating, there are 2 outdoor pools, 3 tennis courts, a gym and the Veli Spa. There's also a full dive centre and watersports setup, and the house reef has coral close enough to snorkel straight off the island.
Location and getting there
This is the resort's trump card. The transfer from MLE is a 10-minute speedboat — the shortest on our entire list. That makes it ideal if your flight lands late, because there's no waiting around for a seaplane that only runs in daylight. The flip side is that it's in North Male Atoll, close to the city, so it won't feel as cut-off as a resort on a far-flung atoll.
Things to know before booking
A few honest caveats. The property has rebranded as Niva Kurumba, so service may still be settling as the new operator beds in. Some of the buildings show their age despite several rounds of renovation. And because you're so close to Male, this isn't the place for total remoteness — pick a distant atoll if silence is the priority. On the plus side, real guests rate it 8.7 out of 10 across 112 reviews, and there's a kids' club with babysitting plus meeting and event space for seminars or weddings.
Our take
Kurumba is the easiest call on the list for one specific traveller: the family or couple landing at MLE late at night who wants a proper 5-star resort within a 10-minute boat ride. You're staying in the property that started the Maldives, the food choice is unmatched here, and you can be poolside before midnight. That's why it's our pick at #7.

Insider Tips
- If your flight lands at MLE late at night, this is the pick — the 10-minute speedboat runs after dark, so you can check in straight away instead of waiting for a morning seaplane.
- Make a point of working through all 9 restaurants over your stay — the range of nationalities is the widest on the list.
- Book a Pool Villa if you want your own private pool rather than sharing the two main ones.
