In-Depth Review

Rooms and decor

The rooms here are called fare (Pacific for hut), and there are roughly 152 of them scattered across the island. Every one is a single-storey house with a thatched roof and wood-and-stone walls, finished inside in earth tones — sky, sand and soft brown that pull the sea-and-sand theme in without overdoing it. The one to try at least once is the Waterfront Deluxe Fare, lined up along the water facing Port Vila harbour: open the balcony doors and you get the town and the mountains opposite full in view, sailboats in the bay by day, city lights reflecting off the water at night. A step up are the Premium Fares, which add a jacuzzi on the balcony for soaking while the sun comes up. The Garden Fares are friendlier on price, tucked into the forest at the back of the island — quiet, better for people who prefer birdsong to surf. But if you have come specifically for the bay view, pay the extra and take a Waterfront; it is well worth the difference. Beds are soft, the air-con is cold enough, and several bathrooms have an outdoor shower for bathing under the stars — an experience guests talk about long after they get home.

Food and amenities

What sets Iririki apart is that the island has everything you need for a day off. Start with the two pools — the main one is open to the bay view and has a swim-up bar so you can order a cocktail without leaving the water, plus a smaller pool for families with kids. The private beach sits on the north of the island, shallow and clear, good for snorkelling over the colourful fish on the reef near shore; the resort lends out masks, snorkels, fins and kayaks free. To properly unwind, walk up the small rise to the sea-view Iririki Day Spa, where the windows open to let the breeze through while you have a massage — the signature is a South Pacific coconut-oil massage using real local ingredients, around $60–98 for a 60-minute course. Come evening, Sunset Restaurant & Bar is the popular spot for sunset over the sea with a cocktail, while dinner at Mangoes Restaurant serves contemporary Pacific food with an Asian-French touch and fresh fish that comes into the town market day by day. Cap the night at Jewel Casino, open all night with roulette, baccarat, slots and a cold-beer bar — relaxed enough that dropping in for a small flutter feels easy.

Location and getting there

Picture it — you are standing at the wharf in central Port Vila, a small white ferry pulls in, and three minutes across the clear green water you are on the other side. Walk up from the jetty and the cars, horns and market noise you heard five minutes ago vanish, leaving soft waves and birdsong in the tropical forest. This is a 69-acre private island that is the resort in its entirety, and likely the closest commercial private island to a capital city centre anywhere in the South Pacific. There are no cars; you get around on wooden boardwalks through the forest and small stairways down to each fare, so it feels more like exploring a hidden island than checking into a hotel — parrots and little lizards dart past on the way. Getting here is straightforward: from Bauerfield Airport (VLI) it is about a 15-minute drive to the wharf, then the free ferry across.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to help you decide — Iririki has been open for decades, and while it keeps upgrading, some fares, the Garden category especially, are clearly showing their age, with visible wear on wood trim, curtains and some bathroom hardware. If you expect a room that looks brand-new, adjust your expectations or pay up for a recently renovated Waterfront Deluxe or Premium Fare. On food and drink prices, fair warning — because it is on an island, everything has to come over by boat, so main meals run about $26–40 a plate and cocktails $13–18. On a tighter budget, take the free ferry back to eat lunch in town where it is much cheaper, and save the budget for dinner at the resort for the setting. Another thing to watch: the ferry runs 24 hours, but heavy rain or rough seas can pause it for 30 minutes to an hour, so on a day with a flight home or a big-boat dive trip, leave about 1.5 hours before your appointment. Finally, the island Wi-Fi is fairly slow compared with town — fine for checking email, but don't count on HD Netflix.

Our take

Having read through several hundred real reviews across Agoda, Booking and Tripadvisor, Iririki Island Resort & Spa is the Port Vila icon that sells the "closest private island in the harbour" experience like nothing else in Vanuatu. The free 3-minute ferry and the postcard bay view are why guests keep coming back. If the trip in your head is waking up for sunrise on the fare balcony, snorkelling off the beach, a fresh-fish lunch at Mangoes, a spa in the afternoon, sunset at the Sunset Bar, then closing the night on roulette at Jewel Casino, this is the most complete answer there is. But if you expect a brand-new top-tier resort like the best of the Maldives, or you are very particular about room condition, dial expectations down a touch and book a Premium fare or above. Overall we give it 8.4/10 — best for honeymooning couples, families who want kids safe in a closed area, and first-timers who want both quiet and the convenience of the town centre in one trip.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know

✓ Why we recommend it
  • A location you get nowhere else in Port Vila — a 69-acre private island in the middle of the harbour, yet the free ferry takes only 3 minutes to the town centre, running every 10–15 minutes around the clock.
  • The thatched-roof Pacific fares face Port Vila harbour for a postcard view all day; at night the city lights reflect off the water and it is genuinely beautiful.
  • The island has everything covered — 2 pools, a private beach, the sea-view Iririki Day Spa, Jewel Casino open all night, and several restaurants and cafes all within walking distance.
  • A strong fit for families because it is a closed area with no cars, so kids can run around safely, and water activities are ready to go from snorkelling and kayaking through to small sailing dinghies.
  • The Ni-Vanuatu staff are warmly genuine in that distinctly South Pacific way — review after review agrees they smile, remember guests' names, and make you feel like you have come home.
💡 Good to know before you book
  • Some fares, the Garden category in particular, are starting to show their age, with visible wear on wood trim and curtains; renovation hasn't reached the whole island, so if you want a room that genuinely looks fresh, ask for a Waterfront Deluxe or Premium.
  • Food and drinks at the resort run high because it sits on an island — main meals are about $26–40 a plate and cocktails $13–18, so on a tighter budget the move is to eat lunch in town and come back for dinner at the resort.
  • The ferry runs 24 hours, but heavy rain or rough seas can pause it for 30 minutes to an hour, so leave a buffer before a flight home or a big-boat dive trip — allow about 1.5 hours.

Insider Tips

  • Ask for a Waterfront Deluxe Fare facing the eastern side of Port Vila harbour for sunrise over the city and the city lights at night — much better than the Garden Fares set back in the forest.
  • The free ferry runs every 10–15 minutes, 24 hours, so use it to eat lunch in town where food is far cheaper than on the island, then come back for sunset at the poolside bar.
  • Come between May and October, Vanuatu's dry season — dry air, clear skies, clear water, the best time to dive. Avoid January to March, which is cyclone season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ferry to the island cost anything?
No — the ferry is free for resort guests, running every 10–15 minutes around the clock. It takes only about 3 minutes from Iririki Wharf in central Port Vila across to the island.
Is Iririki Island Resort & Spa good for families?
Very much so. It is a closed island with no cars, so kids can run around safely, and there are 2 pools, a shallow-water private beach, and water activities on hand. Some fares are single-storey houses, though, so if you are a larger group, check which rooms can take an extra bed for children.
What is there to eat at the resort?
Several places — the main Mangoes Restaurant serves contemporary Pacific food with a bay view, Sunset Restaurant & Bar does dinner with a sunset view, and there is a small poolside cafe. Main plates start around $26–40 and drinks run $13–18.
