All 15 rooms and apartments are decorated differently — some lean modern, others classic Hungarian — and each has air-con, a TV and free Wi-Fi. The ones worth chasing are the Superior rooms and anything with a Castle-view balcony; one guest summed it up as a balcony perfect to sit and drink a glass of wine on in the evening. The catch is consistency. A few family apartments still run 10-year-old IKEA furniture with sofa beds that aren't comfortable to sleep on, and the room you're given doesn't always match the listing photos — one reviewer noted the apartment booked was not the one shown in the photos. Confirm your exact room type when you reserve.

Food and amenities

This is where the hotel pulls ahead of an ordinary boutique. Macok Bistro ranks 8th and the sister wine bar brumbrum ranks 17th in Hungary's Stylish Rural Restaurants list. Macok does contemporary Hungarian food built on local ingredients; brumbrum is the more relaxed wine-bar side. Both are part of the same operation and open to outside diners as well as guests, so book a week ahead. The breakfast buffet is included and gets called outstanding by reviewers — local Hungarian dishes, fresh-baked bread, fresh fruit. The other quiet win is free underground parking, which is hard to find anywhere in the old quarter.

Location and getting there

You're right next to Eger Castle in the pedestrian old town — about 1 minute to the Castle entrance, 5 minutes to Dobó Square, and 8 minutes to both Eger Basilica and the Minaret Tower. Restaurants, cafes and wine shops are all a short stroll through the old streets. Eger Bus Station is a 12-minute walk; the train station is 20 minutes on foot or about 5 minutes by car. The free parking underneath makes it an easy pick if you're driving in.

Things to know before booking

Two honest caveats. First, the photos can mislead — reviewers have ended up in a different room than the one pictured, so pin down the room code in writing. Second, the family apartments vary: some carry that decade-old furniture and uncomfortable sofa beds, so they're the units to avoid. Beyond that, the rooms are individually styled, which means the feel changes from one to the next. Ask what you're actually getting rather than assuming.

Imola Udvarház is the foodie's pick in Eger — somewhere you'd book partly to eat Macok Bistro without leaving the building, partly to sleep a minute from Eger Castle in the pedestrian quarter, and partly for that rare free parking if you've driven in. Take a Standard or Superior with a Castle-view balcony, confirm the room code when you book, and steer clear of the older family apartments. Do that and the stay earns its rate at a score of 8.5/10.
