Rooms and decor

All 174 rooms are a decent size with enough furniture to work, plus air-con, a TV, a fridge and free Wi-Fi; the bathrooms have a shower and the basics. Reviewers are blunt about the trade-off: 'rooms are of a good size and the furniture is adequate, but there are signs of wear and tear everywhere.' Expect bathroom fittings that are starting to peel and rust, the odd stained carpet, and windows and doors that no longer sit tight. That is the deal here — you pay less and the budget goes into the garden and the pools rather than the finish. Rooms facing the garden are quieter and nicer than the ones over the road.

Food and amenities

The main event is the 6 thermal pools — 3 indoor and 3 outdoor in the garden, lifeguarded during opening hours, fed from the same underground thermal source Eger is known for. There is a sauna and add-on spa treatments, and the grounds run to a stand of old trees with plenty of room to walk. Breakfast is a buffet reviewers call 'varied and satisfying' — local Hungarian dishes, fresh-baked bread, cheese, ham, eggs, fruit and good coffee. The restaurant serves proper Hungarian food alongside Egri Bikavér wine, the staff work in several languages, and one common line sums it up: 'staff are attentive, hotel is clean.'

Location and getting there

The hotel sits inside the Érsek-kert garden, right next to Eger's public thermal bath. Eger Basilica is an 8-minute walk, the Lyceum and Minorita Templom are both 0.4 mile off, Dobó Square is 10 minutes on foot and Eger Castle 12 minutes. The garden setting is noticeably calmer than the hotels in the historic core. Eger Train Station is a 15-minute walk or 5 minutes by car, and the hotel has its own parking — handy for families who drive in.

Things to know before booking

This is an older property. The building is nearly 30 years old and has not had a major renovation, so go in expecting dated rooms, worn carpets and tired bathrooms rather than a crisp modern finish. The peeling and rusting fittings and loose windows show up repeatedly in reviews — none of it is a deal-breaker if the pools and garden are why you came, but it is real. If you want new and a fully 4-star finish instead, Hotel Eger & Park or Villa Völgy are the better-value calls.

Hunguest Hotel Flóra is at its best for families who want the kids in the thermal pools, a wide garden to roam and a calm setting, and who can shrug off a building that is showing its years. If the point of the trip is affordable wellness with space for children, it delivers. If you are after newness and a top-end 4-star room, look at Hotel Eger & Park or Villa Völgy instead.
