In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Hotel Vendome Nice puts 56 rooms inside an 1870 building — 3-metre ceilings, tall windows, original parquet floors, all done in gold, cream and sea-blue with the heavy drapes of an old Paris hotel. The bathrooms were fully renovated in 2019 in cream marble with rain showers. Standard rooms run 16-20 sq m and Superior rooms 22-28 sq m — ask for the Superior with Balcony, which has a small balcony over the garden. One review summed it up as staying in the apartment of a Belle Epoque Nice local. Bath products are a local Provence brand.
Food and amenities
What sets Vendome apart is the private garden inside the hotel — shaded by big trees and olive trees, with benches, a retreat you rarely find in central Nice. In summer (May to September) breakfast is served out in the garden, something no station-area hotel here can match. The lobby bar has a vintage feel, with a signature cocktail around $14 and Provence wine. Breakfast is a buffet at about $19 a head — fresh croissants, eggs, cheese, Provence ham and fruit. There is no gym or spa.
Location and getting there
Rue Pastorelli 26 sits in the heart of the Carre d'Or, the most upscale district in Nice (Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Michelin restaurants). Gare de Nice-Ville is 600 m away, an 8-minute walk. Place Massena is 5 minutes on foot and Cours Saleya, the Old Town flower market, about 8 minutes; the Promenade des Anglais is 12 minutes. Tram L1 at the Opera-Vieille Ville stop is a 5-minute walk, and the airport (NCE) is about 25 minutes on Tram L2 from Gare Thiers for around $1.60.
Things to know before booking
This is the farthest hotel from the station on the list — 600 m, an 8-minute walk — so if you want to be right by the platforms, look elsewhere. The lift is small, in keeping with the old building, which makes it best for one bag rather than a family hauling several large suitcases. And being a small boutique, there is no gym and no spa.
Our take
Vendome is for the honeymoon couple after the real Nice, the solo traveler who likes a boutique in an upscale district, and the shopper who wants to be inside the Carre d'Or. It is a 4-star in a smart neighbourhood from about $126 a night, and the private garden is the kind of detail you remember. It is not the pick for families with several big bags, given that small lift, or for anyone who needs to be steps from the station.
