In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Every room is done in Alpine-modern style, mixing old pine wood with local craftwork, with a big, comfortable bed and a marble bathroom on heated floors. Guest reviews keep coming back to one thing: "waking up to the Eiger view feels like a dream." South-facing rooms look straight at Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, while north-facing rooms look out at the Schilthorn cliff — try to get a south-facing one, it's worth the price difference. The Junior Suites add a private balcony with a chair for watching the sun drop behind Jungfrau around 21:00 in summer.
Food and amenities
The Selfness Spa is the second big draw — a large indoor pool, a Finnish sauna, a hammam (Turkish steam room), a steam bath and a relaxation room with mountain views, all free for guests all day. Massage and beauty treatments cost extra. One review called it "the best spa I've used at a small resort." The breakfast buffet covers Swiss cheese, Bircher Müesli, Rösti, charcuterie, homemade bread and local cake. Free afternoon Kaffee und Kuchen runs daily from 15:00 to 17:00 — the Stähli family's homemade cake is well known. The main dining room serves a 5-course half-board dinner built on local ingredients that change with the season.
Location and getting there
Mürren is a car-free village perched on a cliff at 1,650 m. To get there you take the train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen, then the BLM cable car up to Mürren (about 15 minutes), or the Stechelberg-Mürren route via the Schilthornbahn. Hotel Eiger sits directly opposite the BLM station — under a minute to the lobby. The Schilthorn station (Piz Gloria, the James Bond 007 film location) is at the far end of the village, about a 10-minute walk along Mürren's single street. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is roughly 3 hours away by train, and a Swiss Travel Pass covers every leg.
Things to know before booking
This is the priciest stay on the list, starting around $410 a night and running up to about $910 for the top rooms. Because Mürren is car-free, you can only reach it by cable car from Lauterbrunnen, so hauling luggage up is a hassle — though the hotel will move your bags from the station to your room if you arrange it ahead. And in high season (July-August and December-March) you'll need to book about 3 months ahead.
Our take
Hotel Eiger Selfness is the hotel travelers mention most when they think of Mürren, and it scores 9.2/10 on Agoda. The view of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau straight from the room, the free spa, and the warm service the Stähli family has built over more than 5 generations are what carry it. If you want the best peak views in the village and a pool and sauna to come back to, this is the one to book.
