The moment you open the door you notice the space — the Superior rooms run 25-32 sq m, surprisingly roomy for a 4-star in a Balkan capital. The look is modern and minimal in warm cream and brown tones, clean rather than flashy. The king-size bed sits on a deep Simmons mattress that several reviews say has them sleeping in. Pillows come in a few firmnesses, and the double curtains block light well. The private balcony actually opens, with some rooms facing the street over the city and others looking at the shadow of Gorica hill, which gave the city its name. The bathroom is a glass rain shower in pale tile. Storage is generous, with a safe, a minibar, a kettle with Nescafé, and a large desk that business travelers will appreciate. Wi-Fi is fast throughout and handles online meetings without a hitch.

Food and amenities

What sets Aurel apart from other hotels its size here is the in-house Hot Edge Spa. Head down to the lower floor and you'll find a wellness zone with a small jacuzzi for four or five, a fragrant pine Finnish sauna, and a eucalyptus steam bath. Guests use it free during set hours, which is rare at this price. Reviews agree that soaking here in the evening after a day exploring the city is a trip highlight. Massage and scrub treatments cost extra, at rates that feel easy compared to Western Europe. The free buffet breakfast runs each morning from 7 to 10 in the ground-floor restaurant, with fresh-baked goods from the kitchen, Balkan pogača bread, Montenegrin cheese from the Durmitor mountains, local pršut cured meat, eggs and fresh omelets to order, seasonal fruit, thick local yogurt, pressed juice, and espresso. Plenty of reviews quietly admit the breakfast is good enough that you won't want to eat anywhere else. There's also a small bar open in the evening, a small meeting room, free parking in the building, and a 24-hour front desk ready to book Durmitor mountain trips, Skadar Lake, or a day out to Kotor.

Location and getting there

Podgorica is a compact capital — you can drive across it in 20 minutes. Aurel sits on Bulevar Josipa Broza Tita in the growing new business district; the street is named for the former Yugoslav president and runs through the office and new-build quarter. It's clean, orderly, and clearly quieter than the centre. Walk north about 12 minutes and you reach the central square, Trg Republike, with its statues and fountain, ringed by the city's main shops and restaurants. A little further is Stara Varoš, the old Ottoman quarter with the 17th-century Sahat Kula clock tower and the handsome Osmanagić mosque. The Millennium Bridge, the city's symbol, is about 1.5 km away — an 18-minute walk or a 5-minute taxi. From the hotel the E80 highway out of town is easy to reach, which makes this a great base if you're renting a car: it's a 1-hour drive to Kotor, 1.5 hours to Skadar Lake, and 2.5 hours to Durmitor National Park. Podgorica Airport (TGD) is only 11 km away, a 15-20 minute drive, and the hotel arranges affordable transfers — handy if you're flying in for a short city break.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to help you decide. First, weigh the location. Even though it's only 1 km from the central square, the area around the hotel is offices and new buildings, not a strip of bars and restaurants for an evening wander. If you expect to step out into something lively right away, it may feel too quiet — you'll walk into the centre every time you want dinner or a drink. That's an easy 12 minutes in good weather, but in winter you may want a taxi (in-town fares are cheap, around $3-4). Second, dining near the hotel is thin: just a few cafes and a small mall, so food explorers need to plan a bit. Third, the hotel restaurant and bar keep set hours and close fairly early, so if you're back late you may miss room service — check the timings with reception. And one small thing: the building has a single, not-very-large elevator, so there can be a short wait before breakfast, though with only 30 rooms it's never really a problem.

It suits three kinds of traveler best: (1) business travelers flying into Podgorica briefly who want a big room near the airport and highway at a fair price; (2) couples after a quiet stay with a spa to unwind in after sightseeing; and (3) anyone renting a car to tour Montenegro and using Podgorica as a base for Kotor, Durmitor, or Skadar. If you're a budget backpacker who wants a bar right outside the door, or a luxury traveler expecting full 5-star service, this may not be your answer.
