What makes it more interesting than the other budget options around here is the free shuttle to Jonker Walk, which fixes the one problem hotels on the edge of the centre tend to have. The rooms look fresh and clean, done in warm-toned wood furniture, and many of them have a small balcony that gives them a more open feel than places at the same price. The beds are comfortable, and reviewers say the rooms run wide enough not to feel cramped.

Food and amenities

The downside is that the AC in some rooms plays up now and then, and in-room supplies like toiletries occasionally come up short. The upside is that the staff are friendly and quick to deal with it — report a problem and someone is on it fast. The hotel has its own restaurant, and around the block you will find more eateries plus several of Melaka's well-known satay celup spots, so food is never far. Drive yourself and there is free parking, an edge a lot of places cannot give you. The thing that really sets Arissa apart from its rivals, though, is that Jonker Walk shuttle — note the timetable at check-in, get around easily after dark, and save on Grab across the whole trip.

Location and getting there

Hotel Arissa sits in the commercial district near the old town, about a 10-to-15-minute walk from Jonker. You can walk it, but on a really hot day it gets tiring — which is exactly where the hotel shuttle earns its keep. The streets around it have a fair number of shops and restaurants, so even though you are not in the dead centre of the old town, food and the basics stay within easy reach.

Things to know before booking

Two honest catches. The AC in some rooms is intermittent, so check yours soon after you check in. In-room supplies like toiletries are sometimes not fully restocked, though staff swap them out quickly. And the 10-to-15-minute walk to Jonker means you either lean on the shuttle or accept a longer stroll in the heat — fine if you plan around the pickups, less so if you want the night market on your doorstep.

Arissa works for budget travellers and families who want a fresh, clean room without old-town prices, and who are happy to use the hotel shuttle to reach the heart of Melaka. If you are driving in and want free parking with a room that still feels new, it is good value. If you would rather be a few minutes' walk from Jonker, a hotel right in the old town is the better call.
