In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Rooms are spread across 5 towers, and the Rainbow Tower is the resort's landmark — ocean-view rooms here look straight out over Waikiki and Diamond Head. Prices swing a lot by tower and floor depending on the view. The decor is a simple Hawaiian style, with rooms running roughly 25-35 sq m. Guests note the rooms are not as new as Alohilani, but they are clean and the bedding is good quality. Rates start around $270 a night.
Food and amenities
This is where the resort earns its reputation: more than 20 restaurants and bars sit on the grounds, from the fine-dining Bali Steak & Seafood down to the poolside Tropics Bar & Grill. Add 5 themed pools with water slides and the private Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon, and you can fill a day without stepping off the property. Every Friday there is a fireworks show over the beach that has become a Waikiki highlight in its own right.
Location and getting there
The resort sits at the western end of Waikiki, where the beach is less crowded than the central stretch and the private lagoon makes the water safe for small kids. The shallow, calm Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon is the standout for families with little ones. It is a 15-20 minute walk to the central Waikiki shopping district, so the trade-off for the quieter sand is a slightly longer stroll to the shops and restaurants of Kalakaua Avenue.
Things to know before booking
The resort is enormous — walking from your room to a pool or the lobby can take a good 10 minutes, which wears on you across a stay. The Resort Fee and parking are charged on top of the room rate and together add a meaningful amount per night, so price the total, not the headline rate alone. And the rooms are older than the newest resorts in the area — fine and clean, but not a designer room if that is what you are after.
Our take
This is the best choice in Waikiki for families with young children who want a wide range of on-site activity and never really need to leave. The shallow lagoon, the slide pools and the Friday fireworks keep kids happy. It is less suited to couples after a quiet, romantic mood or travelers who want a fresh, designed room. Just watch the Resort Fee and parking that stack onto the nightly rate.
