In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Hanoi Marvellous Hotel & Spa hides behind tall wooden doors on Duong Thanh Street, in the thick of Hanoi's Old Quarter, where car horns mix with the smell of stir-fried greens from the street kitchens next door. We took a fifth-floor deluxe with a small balcony, on the staff's own tip. The hotel runs 50 rooms across 8 floors, classic in style, with cool dark parquet floors underfoot, a firm king bed, clean white duvets, and a grey-marble bathroom with a strong shower. Push the balcony door open and the tiled roofs of the 36 ancient streets stack up in layers. At $40 to $70 a night, it earns its 4 stars.
Food and amenities
In the evening guests head down to the in-house spa, where a 60-minute Vietnamese massage runs by candlelight and running water that blots out the horns outside. Next morning the ground-floor restaurant lays out both a Vietnamese set, hot pho bo and banh mi, and a continental one. The owner comes round to say hello in English and points you to a good pho place nearby, which squares with the reviews praising the warm owner and staff. Guest scores land around 9.4.
Location and getting there
The 24-hour front desk sets us up with a free bike and a hand-drawn map. It's a 10-minute ride to Hoan Kiem Lake and the red The Huc bridge that leads to Ngoc Son Temple, then 5 more to Gothic St. Joseph's Cathedral, where you can sip egg coffee at Cafe Giang across the street. The airport, Noi Bai International, sits about 27 km out, and the hotel will arrange a transfer. Come back at night for a glass of bia hoi, Vietnamese draft beer for under 60 cents, and stroll home through the night market.
Things to know before booking
The Old Quarter never goes quiet. Outside those heavy doors it's scooters, horns, and crowds from dawn to late, so light sleepers should request a higher floor away from the street. As a boutique, it has no swimming pool, the nearest sit on larger hotels a few blocks over. And it fills up fast in high season, October to April, with the balcony rooms going first, so book a few weeks ahead.
Our take
Hanoi Marvellous suits couples and travelers who want a boutique feel, who'd rather wake to old tiled roofs, get family-style service, and stay within walking distance of every main landmark. It opens our list as the most balanced pick in the Old Quarter.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The strongest 4-star boutique in this roundup, right in the heart of the Old Quarter on Duong Thanh Street.
- 50 rooms across 8 floors, finished in a classic style with dark parquet floors and a balcony on many units that looks out over the tiled rooftops of the 36 ancient streets.
- About a 10-minute walk to Hoan Kiem Lake, the red The Huc bridge, and Gothic St. Joseph's Cathedral, with Hang Da Market a few minutes closer.
- Has a spa, a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk, and free bikes you can take out to explore the old grid.
- Guests repeatedly single out the hands-on owner and the warm, English-speaking staff, who hand over maps and pho recommendations on arrival.
- The Old Quarter is loud and busy. Outside the heavy wooden doors it's car horns, scooters, and street-food smoke from morning to night, so light sleepers should ask for a higher floor.
- This is a boutique property, so there is no swimming pool. The nearest one is the rooftop pool at a couple of larger hotels nearby.
- Rooms fill fast in high season (October to April), and the balcony deluxe units go first, so book a few weeks ahead.
