In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Our room ran about 28 square metres with a ceiling over 3 metres, a king bed dressed in ivory satin, and a carved wood screen separating the bedroom from the bath. The bathroom is cream marble with a strong rain shower, and there's a brass teapot with free Pu'er tea waiting. The bones of the place are what sell it: this is a real siheyuan, and the carved timber is everywhere — beams, columns, louvered windows and stair rails, all in decades-old Yunnan mountain pine, carved with auspicious birds, plum blossoms and the Chinese character for luck.
Food and amenities
Mornings, guests tend to walk to the market near the old wall for cross-bridge rice noodles — the local move is to ask for rushan cheese in them instead of the Western kind, and it genuinely works. Staff speak basic English and earn the 9.5 service score: they helped us book boat tickets for Erhai Lake and pointed us to the clay-pot fish restaurant the locals actually eat at. Cleanliness rates 9.5 too, and every number checks out in person.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits deep inside Dali Old Town near the Wuhua Tower. It's a 3-minute walk to Fuxing Road, the main street, 8 minutes to the south town gate, and 12 minutes to the Erhai Gate on the east side. The Cangshan range rises to the west and Erhai Lake sits to the east, with the Three Pagodas close by the old town — so the headline sights are all within easy reach on foot or a short ride.
Things to know before booking
It's pricier than the budget guesthouses scattered around the Old Town, with rooms starting near $57 and climbing to roughly $114 a night. It's also a small hotel, so the room count is limited and you won't find big-resort facilities. And because the scores are so high, rooms fill fast in high season — book well ahead or you'll miss it. One note: this place replaces the article's original number-two pick, which no longer takes online bookings.
Our take
Courtyard Hotel Dali Ancient City is at its best for honeymooning couples, small families and culture travelers who want to sleep inside a genuine old Chinese house in the heart of the Old Town — not a modern copy of one. In the $57 to $114 range we think it's strong value, especially for couples shooting pre-wedding photos, since every corner of the courtyard is a free backdrop. With cleanliness and service both at 9.5 and an overall guest score near 9.7, we recommend it wholeheartedly.
