In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Commodore Hotel Gyeongju has been open a long time in the Bomun Lake Resort district, and the thing people remember from the moment they drive up is the traditional Korean palace exterior — an ancient-style roof, carved woodwork along the eaves and stone gardens laid out in classic Korean style. Walk into the lobby and you get high ceilings and decor that mixes modern touches with Korean elements. All 320 or so rooms lean warm and comfortable, not flashy, with solid 4-star function. There are lake-view and garden-view options, soft standard-size beds, clean linens and bathrooms that are clean and roomy enough. Family rooms fit 3-4 people, and some are the traditional Korean ondol style, with under-floor heating and a thick mattress on the ground — a new experience for kids and adults who want to try a bit of Korean culture. Most reviews praise the cleanliness and the room size, though some guests say they got a room that looked older than expected. If you want the best-condition room, ask at check-in or flag it ahead of time.
Food and amenities
The hotel has an indoor pool plus an outdoor pool for summer, a fitness room and lounge space for families. Kids can splash around, and for Gyeongju families who make swimming the main event of the day, Commodore is good value. On the food side, the breakfast buffet serves basic Korean and simple Western dishes — not the variety of the 5-stars in the area, but enough to start the day. For a better meal, head out into the Bomun area, which has gukbap, samgyetang and samgyeopsal spots plus good cafes a short drive away. On site there are one or two restaurants and a cafe for lunch and dinner. The helpful staff are the thing reviews agree on — attentive and full of good Gyeongju tips, happy to book Bulguksa and Seokguram tours, arrange taxis and answer travel questions with care. They speak basic English.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits in the Bomun Lake Resort district on Bomun Lake, just a 5-minute walk to the water — closer than The-K Hotel at 9 minutes and on par with the Hilton. Commodore's lakeside spot is genuinely close to the water. Around it are a waterside path for morning and evening walks, bike rental, the Bomun golf course, the Gyeongju World theme park that kids love, and Silla Millennium Park. From here it is about 15 minutes by car to Bulguksa Temple (UNESCO) and around 25-30 minutes to Seokguram. The Hwangnidan-gil old town — with the Daereungwon royal tombs, the Cheomseongdae observatory, the Donggung Palace pond and its cafes — is about 15 minutes by car. Singyeongju KTX station, for trains on to Busan or Seoul, is about 20 minutes away. Gyeongju has no subway, so you get around by car, taxi and local bus; families are best off renting a car to reach the city's sights.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk. First, the aging building: Commodore has been open a long time and renovation is uneven floor to floor — some rooms look new and clean, others older. Everything still works and is clean, but anyone expecting the polish and modern feel of the Hilton or Lahan in the same district may find it dated. Ask for a recently renovated, high-floor lake-view room at check-in. Second, limited food and bar options: the on-site restaurants are not as varied as the 5-stars, and the breakfast buffet is basic, so eating every meal here can get dull — explore the Bomun area, which has plenty of good, affordable choices. Third, the lakefront location is not the city center: it is a 15-minute drive into Hwangnidan-gil every time you want to walk the old markets, so if you love being able to stroll to markets and cafes, a hanok in the old town may suit you better. But if your picture is a lakefront resort on a budget, Commodore fits best.
Our take
Having read through plenty of real guest reviews, our team sees Commodore Hotel Gyeongju as a hotel that delivers "classic lakefront, traditional Korean architecture and the best value in the district" in a way that lands well for budget-minded families. If your trip is about staying on Bomun Lake at an affordable rate, taking the kids to the pool and driving out to Bulguksa, then strolling the lakeside in the evening, this is great value. It works best for budget families, value travelers and anyone who wants a lakeside base without paying 5-star rates. If the heart of your trip is premium service, polished modern rooms or a Japanese-style hot-spring bath, the Hilton, Lahan or The-K will suit you better. Overall we give it 8.2/10, best for value-focused families who care about a lakeside spot and warm service.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- Best value of the Bomun Lake hotels, from about $77 a night — below the Hilton, Lahan and The-K in the same district. That makes it the budget choice for families who still want to be on the lake.
- The exterior is a traditional Korean palace design, with an ancient-style roof, carved woodwork and a stone garden. It gives the place a period feel that photographs beautifully and is hard to find in the modern hotels nearby.
- Family rooms fit 3-4 people comfortably, and some have a traditional Korean ondol heated floor where you sleep on the ground — a novelty for families who want to try a slice of Korean culture.
- The helpful staff come up again and again in reviews. They are attentive and full of good tips, and they will help book Bulguksa and Seokguram tours, arrange taxis and point you to restaurants in the area.
- On Bomun Lake, just a 5-minute walk to the water, close to the Bomun golf course, the Gyeongju World theme park and the lakeside path — a handy base for visiting the city's temples and landmarks.
- The building and facilities are starting to show their age. Parts of the common areas and some rooms look like a hotel that opened a long time ago, and renovation is uneven floor to floor — anyone expecting the polish of the Hilton may find it dated.
- Food and bar options on site are limited. There are one or two restaurants and a cafe, and the breakfast buffet runs basic rather than the spread you get at a 5-star. For a better meal, head out into the Bomun area.
- It is not in the Hwangnidan-gil center, so it is a 15-minute drive into the old town every time you want to wander the markets and cafes. Lakeside, though, it sits very close to the water.

Insider Tips
- Ask for a high-floor lake-view room at check-in — the price difference is small but the waterside view is well worth it.
- Photograph the traditional Korean palace exterior near sunset, when the golden light against the ancient-style roof makes it look like a real palace.
- Try a room with a traditional Korean ondol floor if you want something different — sleeping on a heated floor is the kind of thing visitors end up loving.
