In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Deluxe Double runs about 25 sqm and goes for roughly $22 a night — contemporary minimal in white and wood, still fresh from the 2022 opening. You get a Queen bed at 160 by 200 cm, a desk, a sofa, a 43-inch TV, a minibar and a fridge. The private bathroom has a rainfall shower, thick cotton towels and Cocoon Vietnamese organic toiletries. The air-con is steady, the 100 Mbps Wi-Fi is genuinely quick, and the big window looks straight onto Pham Ngu Lao and the street traffic — there is some road noise, but the double-glazed windows handle most of it.
Food and amenities
The 6th-floor rooftop bar opens 17:00 to 23:00 — wood walls, Edison bulbs, chillout music and a view over the city and Bui Vien Walking Street below. Happy hour is 17:00 to 19:00, when the signature Saigon Sunset (rum, mango, lime, mint) drops to about $3.40. The ground-floor restaurant runs 06:00 to 22:00: the Phở Bò at roughly $2.30 is better than what you will find at the street stalls, and Bún Bò Huế comes in around $2.70. There is a free pho breakfast each morning 06:30 to 09:30, plus luggage storage if you arrive early or leave late.
Location and getting there
Three minutes out the door puts you on Bui Vien Walking Street — an 800-metre pedestrian strip open 19:00 to 02:00, packed with bars, restaurants, live music, massage and hookah spots. Saigon beer starts at about $1, and a glass of Bia Hoi, the local draught sold in the evenings, is around $0.30. Street food like Bún Thịt Nướng, Bánh Xèo and Gỏi Cuốn starts near $2. Pham Ngu Lao Street runs parallel with more authentic Vietnamese restaurants and cafes. Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) is roughly a 25-minute drive away — a Grab is around $7, or the 109 airport bus takes 30 to 40 minutes for about $1.
Things to know before booking
This is a private room, not a budget bunk, so it costs more than the dorms nearby — doubles from about $21 against roughly $10 for a dorm bed. The rooftop bar runs until 23:00 and the sound carries, so book a lower floor if you want to sleep early. And there is no lift — getting to the top rooms means carrying your bags up a 6-storey stairwell.
Our take
Chotel is the best boutique 3-star in Pham Ngu Lao — opened in 2022, with a rooftop bar, a real restaurant and a spot right in the middle of the backpacker district. It scores 8.8/10 across 1,400+ reviews, and from about $21 it earns its place for couples and solo travellers who want a private room, something new, and Bui Vien nightlife a few minutes away.
