In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Chakrabongse Villas hides down a small lane off Maharaj Soi in Phra Nakhon, surrounded by temples and old fabric shops, and carries an overall guest score of about 9.2/10. Behind a big teak gate with almost no signage you find a green garden and a white European-style villa over 100 years old — the former palace of Prince Chakrabongse Bhuvanath, a son of King Rama V. Reviewers who booked the Riverside Villa describe around 35 square metres under an orange Thai-tiled roof, dressed in silk and teak furniture with Rattanakosin-era detailing. A wooden balcony reaches out over the river, lined up almost exactly with Wat Arun — at night, guests say, the floodlit prang glows gold right in front of you. The bed is a gilt-edged four-poster, the bathroom is marble with a claw-foot tub and Thai Pañpuri toiletries. The villa runs about $400 a night, while the Garden Suite starts near $140 and keeps the same atmosphere.
Food and amenities
The hotel restaurant, The Dining Room, sits in an open riverside pavilion and cooks old-style Thai royal-court food. Reviewers recommend the slow-braised moo hong for about $17 and a pomelo-and-prawn salad for around $15, finishing with sticky rice and mango. There are only 8 tables in the whole place, quiet enough, guests say, to hear the bells of Wat Arun in the evening and the boats passing on the water. Beyond the kitchen, there's a spa and a small pool tucked into the garden.
Location and getting there
The pool itself is little — roughly 8 by 4 metres, tiled in blue-green and hidden among palms — not large, but reviewers call it the most private one they've found in the city. At 07:00 a yoga teacher runs a free session in the riverside sala, stretching to the sound of the current and the first long-tail boats starting up. The trade-off is transit: there's no BTS or MRT within walking distance, so you cross to Wat Arun by ferry from the pier beside the hotel, reach Wat Pho in a few minutes, and walk to the Grand Palace in about 10. For longer trips you'll take river boats or taxis.
Things to know before booking
This is a very small hotel, so rooms are limited and the calendar fills early — book months ahead, especially in high season or around Thai festivals, when it sells out fast. There's no station at the door, so factor in ferry and taxi time and the slower old-town traffic. And only the riverfront villas get the full Wat Arun view; the Garden Suite is quieter and cheaper but faces the garden, not the river.
Our take
Chakrabongse Villas suits couples who want a real royal-court experience and travelers who love history. No other hotel in Bangkok delivers this exact atmosphere — a palace on the river, looking at Wat Arun, with eight tables and a sala for morning yoga. Worth staying once in your life.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- A genuine former royal residence — the palace of Prince Chakrabongse, a son of King Rama V, built over 100 years ago — so the history is real, not decor.
- The riverfront villas sit right on the Chao Phraya, looking across at Wat Arun, which lights up gold after dark. Almost no hotel in Bangkok has this exact view.
- A lush, walled garden hides the whole place from the street, and the villas are decorated in Thai silk, teak furniture and four-poster beds with real craft.
- Wat Pho and Wat Arun are a short boat ride away, and the Grand Palace is about a 10-minute walk, so the big sights are all on your doorstep.
- Real guest scores run high, around 9.2 to 9.5, with character, cleanliness and service all rating above 9.3.
- It's a very small boutique hotel with only a few rooms, so availability is tight and the calendar fills early.
- There's no BTS or MRT station within walking distance. You'll rely on the cross-river ferry, river boats or taxis, and Bangkok traffic in the old town can be slow.
- High season and Thai festival dates book out fast. If you have set travel dates, reserve months ahead or you may not get in at all.

Insider Tips
- Ask specifically for a Riverside Villa — the Garden Suite is lovely too, but only the riverfront rooms get the full Wat Arun view.
- Take the cross-river ferry to Wat Arun in the early evening, when the prang is lit and the crowds have thinned.
- Book well in advance. With only a few rooms and high demand, walk-in or last-minute stays are rarely possible.
