In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Picture a compact, low-rise boutique building sitting on a central plaza redesigned by a world-famous architect, ringed by old stone lanes that lead off to local restaurants and coffee shops — that's the first thing that makes Centrum Hotel work. It's a 47-room place run by a Cypriot family who clearly care about it. Step into the small lobby and you find a warm wooden counter and a sofa that reads more like a living room than a hotel, with staff who greet you like an old friend and tend to start recommending local restaurants right away. Upstairs the rooms lean cream and soft brown, built for comfort rather than showing off, with woodwork, earth-toned curtains and soft, well-kept bedding. The larger windows in some rooms open onto Eleftheria Square, full of people sipping coffee by day and softly lit at night. The overall feel is a warm, informal family boutique — rare in a city where the big chains run the show.
Food and amenities
The other heart of this place is the rooftop terrace where breakfast is served every morning. It's a semi-open space that catches Cyprus's cool morning air, refreshing even in summer. The spread leans fresh and local and Mediterranean — grilled halloumi, the Cypriot national cheese, crisp outside and soft within; Greek yogurt with honey and nuts; seasonal fresh fruit; local tomatoes and cucumbers; eggs cooked to order; bread and pastries baked fresh each day; and strong Cyprus coffee brewed in a little copper pot. Eating up there as the sun rises over the old town, with church bells in the distance, is the moment a lot of reviews call the highlight of their trip. Beyond that, reception runs 24 hours, the staff will book cars and day trips to Troodos, Kyrenia or just about anywhere, there's free Wi-Fi across the hotel at a usable speed, and free luggage storage after checkout if you want to keep exploring before you leave.
Location and getting there
If anything is the trump card here, it's the location — right on Eleftheria Square, the central public space in Nicosia's old town that the legendary architect Zaha Hadid redesigned before she died, now a landmark everyone stops to photograph and a local meeting point. Walk out of the lobby and in about 2 minutes you're on Ledra Street, the main pedestrian strip lined with restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops, clothing stores and local souvenir shops. Just past it is Onasagorou Street, a touch trendier and shaded by bright canvas umbrellas strung across the road. A few minutes further is the Ledra Crossing, a city-center border point where you can walk straight into the northern, Turkish-administered side of Cyprus on nothing but your passport — an experience you won't find anywhere else. City buses and taxis are easy to find, and the main airport, Larnaca International (LCA), is about a 45-minute drive; the hotel can arrange a transfer if you book ahead.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. The complaint that comes up most is room size — fairly small, in the usual old town European way. If you turn up with two big 28-to-30-inch suitcases, the floor space around the bed can feel tight, and the wardrobe and desk are boutique-sized, not the roomy kind you'd get at a 4- or 5-star. The second thing to know up front is that there's no pool, gym or spa at all. If your mental picture is a resort stay with an afternoon swim and a sauna, this won't deliver — the hotel is designed as a base for exploring the old town on foot. Rooms facing Eleftheria Square and the pedestrian street can pick up the sound of people talking into the late evening when the plaza is busy; if you sleep lightly, ask for an inside room facing the lane, or bring a pair of earplugs to be safe. Last, there's no parking under the hotel, so if you rent a car you'll have to use a nearby public lot, which is hard to find at peak hours — using public transport or simply walking is the easier call.
Our take
After reading through hundreds of real guest reviews and comparing it with hotels in the same area, Centrum Hotel is a family-run boutique that sells three things with real confidence — the best old town location in Nicosia, right on Eleftheria Square; staff so warm it feels like staying at a friend's place; and a rooftop-terrace breakfast that's hard to match. All of it at a rate you can actually swallow, roughly $90 to $170 a night, around 40 to 50 percent cheaper than the 4- and 5-star hotels in the same area. If your trip is about walking Nicosia's old town all day, stopping for coffee on Ledra, crossing into the north, coming back to a warm room and waking up to grilled halloumi on the roof in the cool air — this is the spot. But if you want roomy spaces, a pool, a gym or full big-chain service, it can't deliver, and you'd be better off with a 5-star in the newer business district. Overall we give it 8.6/10 — best for couples, solo travelers and small families who value location and warmth over plush facilities.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The location is hard to beat — the hotel sits right on Eleftheria Square, the central public space Zaha Hadid redesigned, with Ledra Street about 2 minutes' walk away and Onasagorou around 3.
- Service is the family kind. A lot of reviews single out the owners and staff for being warm and attentive, remembering names and sorting everything from tour bookings to local restaurant tips.
- Breakfast is served on a semi-open rooftop terrace with fresh local Cypriot food — grilled halloumi, Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and just-baked bread — eaten in the cool morning air.
- Rooms are warm-toned and modern, kept very clean, with good bedding, properly cold air-con and free Wi-Fi that works across the hotel.
- Strong value for the best location in the old town — rates start around $90 a night, roughly 40 to 50 percent cheaper than the 4- and 5-star hotels in the same area.
- This is an old town boutique, so rooms run on the small side in the usual European way. Two big suitcases can be a squeeze, and in some rooms the bed and wardrobe eat up most of the floor space.
- There's no pool, gym or spa at all. If you came for a resort-style stay, this won't do it — the hotel is built as a base for walking the old town, nothing more.
- Rooms facing the square and the pedestrian street can pick up the evening crowd noise when the plaza gets lively. Light sleepers should ask for an inside room or pack a pair of earplugs.

Insider Tips
- Ask for an upper-floor room facing Eleftheria Square if you want the view and the old town atmosphere after dark; if you sleep light, ask for an inside room instead — they're much quieter.
- Have breakfast on the rooftop terrace between 8 and 9 am, when the air is coolest and the old town view is best, and try the grilled halloumi and local bread.
- Walk from the hotel across Ledra Crossing into the northern, Turkish-administered side of Cyprus in a few minutes — bring your passport. It's a city-center border crossing you won't find anywhere else.
