Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi

Centara Grand is about a private beach you can only reach by boat, so it feels like your own island — the quiet and the nature around it matter more here than how fresh some of the rooms are.

In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Krabi has a location you can't get elsewhere — it sits on Pai Plong Bay, reachable only by boat from Ao Nang or on foot along the Monkey Trail through the forest. That makes it feel like a real private island even though Ao Nang is just 1 km away. The 192 rooms and villas are spread across three main buildings that step up a hillside; some look straight out to sea, others face the garden and the limestone cliffs. Deluxe rooms start at 45 sqm, while the Premium Beachfront Villas have a private pool, all done in an easy brown, cream and soft-green Thai contemporary style. Real reviews on Trip.com (8.5/10) split fairly clearly: guests in the recently renovated rooms or the villas call them spacious, clean and comfortable, while those in the older standard buildings complain about damp and dated furniture. The fix is to pick a Premium Deluxe or a villa when you book.
Food and amenities
The resort's centrepiece is its two large pools — a main one in an irregular shape with a shallow kids' zone and a swim-up bar, plus a quieter pool for adults who just want to rest. Tropical garden and big trees ring both. There are four restaurants: Tides, the main one, serves an international breakfast and lunch buffet that reviewers rate the best breakfast buffet in Krabi, with Thai, Western, Indian and fresh seafood; Reflections steakhouse; Italian Job for Italian; and Deep, an over-water spot for tapas and drinks. There's also Spa Cenvaree with Thai herbal treatments, a Cenvaree kids club for ages 4 to 12, a gym, and water sports off the beach. The shuttle boat to Ao Nang runs free every hour from 06:30 to 23:00. Overall score 8.4/10.
Location and getting there
Centara Grand sits on Pai Plong Bay, a small cove right next to Ao Nang but cut off by limestone cliffs, so there's no road in — you take the boat from Ao Nang pier (just 3 to 5 minutes) or walk the Monkey Trail through forest and around the headland (15 to 20 minutes, with plenty of monkeys, so mind your belongings). Pai Plong beach runs about 500 metres of clean white sand with gentle waves in the clear season (November to April), good for kids and quiet evening walks since no day-trippers come through. When you want the buzz of Ao Nang, it's a 3-minute boat away. Krabi Airport is 18 km, about a 25-minute drive to Ao Nang and then the boat; the resort arranges a full transfer for around $43 to $71. For Railay, it's another 15-to-20-minute boat from Ao Nang.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. First, the standard rooms in the older buildings have condition problems — that's where most of the bad reviews come from, with dated furniture, a faint damp smell and faded curtains. The answer is to choose a Premium Deluxe Ocean Facing room or a villa; the extra $43 to $86 a night is well worth it, and those rooms score 9.0 and up. Second, food at the resort is expensive, partly because eating out means a 15-minute round-trip boat. Meals run about $23 to $43 a head and drinks $6 to $11 a glass — a half-board or all-inclusive package works out cheaper than paying separately. Third, the rainy season brings rough water (May to October): some days the sea at Pai Plong is too choppy to swim and the shuttle boat may stop, so check before you book.
Our take
Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Krabi is a great fit for families who want the feel of a private island without going far — a private beach reachable only by boat, limestone cliffs all around, and 5-star facilities from a chain Thais have trusted for years. If your trip is about letting the family swim on a private beach all day, a big breakfast buffet, and an easy hop to Ao Nang, this lands really well — just book a Premium Deluxe or a villa, not a standard room. Overall we give it 8.4/10, best for families and couples after a retreat-style private-beach resort.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- A genuinely private beach — Pai Plong Bay is reachable only by boat or the Monkey Trail, so no day-trippers or beach vendors come through to disturb you.
- The big multi-national breakfast buffet at Tides is a standout, with Thai, Western, Indian and fresh seafood; reviewers call it the best breakfast buffet in Krabi.
- Two large pools — the main irregularly shaped one has a shallow kids' zone and a swim-up bar, plus a quieter pool for adults who just want to relax.
- Strong for families: the wide grounds, kids club for ages 4 to 12, and the safe roughly 500-metre white-sand beach mean children can stay busy all day.
- Far more affordable than the top Railay resorts — a real beachfront 5-star from about $243 a night, well under what Rayavadee charges.
- The standard rooms in the older buildings have condition issues — dated furniture, faded curtains and a faint damp smell — and that is where most of the poor reviews come from. Book a Premium Deluxe Ocean Facing room or a villa instead; that upgrade runs about $43 to $86 more a night and those rooms score 9.0 and up.
- Eating in is expensive, partly because going out means a 15-minute round-trip boat. Meals at the resort run about $23 to $43 a head and drinks $6 to $11 a glass — a half-board or all-inclusive package works out cheaper than paying as you go.
- In the rainy season (May to October) the sea at Pai Plong can get too rough to swim on some days, and the shuttle boat may stop running. Check the forecast before you book and aim for November to April.

Insider Tips
- Ask for a Premium Deluxe Ocean Facing room or a villa — the standard rooms are the oldest and have no sea view.
- Walk the Monkey Trail early, around 7 to 8 am, when the monkeys are out; keep a tight grip on anything in your hands and zip your bag shut.
- The breakfast buffet is packed at 7 to 8 am — come after 9 and it is much calmer.
