If this place has one heart, it is the front terrace and restaurant that face the volcano crater. Many tables are set to look straight out at the Bromo caldera, so you can sip a hot coffee or tea and watch the sun climb slowly over the rim and spill light onto the black sand desert in the morning — the part several reviews call the best of the whole stay. The menu runs to local and simple dishes like nasi goreng, eggs, noodles, and hot drinks, which is just right before or after a run out into the desert. The amenities are otherwise the basics of a mountain guesthouse — there is parking and a spot where jeep drivers meet you in front of the hotel, hot drinks to take the chill off, and a location that is only a few steps from the crater-edge viewpoint, so you skip the long trek that staying farther out would mean.

For the popular sunrise trip, a 4x4 jeep driver meets you in front of the hotel before dawn, takes you up to the Penanjakan viewpoint, then loops back down to cross the sand sea and climb the stairs to the Bromo crater. Things to know before booking

To be straight with you, so you can decide — the charm here is the view, full stop, and you need to lower your expectations for the room itself. Reviews agree the rooms are fairly dated, the amenities basic, and cleanliness and condition not always consistent, so anyone hoping for a sharp, new room may be let down. The second thing is the weather — at roughly 2,200 metres, nights and early mornings are genuinely bitter, and the hot water and heater in some rooms are not strong, so bring your own warm jacket, thick socks, and wool hat to feel better about it. The third, and an important one, is that rooms not on the view side see no caldera at all, and the view rooms cost more, so if you are coming for the view, state clearly that you want a "view-side room" when you book, or you may sadly miss the main draw.

From reading through plenty of real reviews, Cemara Indah Hotel is a stay that sells "location and view," not a luxurious room. If the trip in your head is waking before dawn, opening the curtains to a full Bromo caldera, sipping a hot coffee while the sun comes up over the desert, then walking a few steps to the viewpoint without traveling far, this is a very good-value, well-judged pick — especially for backpackers and solo travelers on a tight budget. But if you want a new, upscale, spotless room with full amenities, this may not be your answer.
