Food and amenities

The other heart of the hotel is the Naked Room contemporary art gallery, set inside the building and free for guests to walk through, rotating exhibitions of young Ukrainian artists year-round — the easiest way to get to know Kyiv's contemporary art scene without going anywhere. Next to it is a hi-fi listening bar spinning real vinyl on a high-end system, big cabinet speakers and a record collection running from jazz and classical to underground electronic. Dim lights, a Ukrainian orange wine or a signature cocktail, and the sound of vinyl make for a night you will remember. One floor up is the "1818" rooftop bar, named for the year the building went up, with sharp outdoor furniture and a full view over Podil's old tile roofs against the golden church domes of the old quarter — at summer sunset it is genuinely one of the most romantic spots in Kyiv. On the food side, a ground-floor restaurant serves reworked Ukrainian dishes blended with contemporary European cooking, built on local farm produce, plus a specialty coffee cafe open morning to evening. Location and getting there

About 5 minutes on foot from the hotel door is Andriyivsky Descent, the cobbled artists' street that climbs up to the pale-green St. Andrew's church standing proud at the top, lined the whole way with handmade souvenirs, paintings, old books and easygoing cafes to drop into. The Kontraktova Ploshcha metro station on the M2 (blue) line is about a 7-minute walk and carries you to the city-centre Khreshchatyk street and Maidan Nezalezhnosti square in a few stops. From Boryspil airport (KBP) it is a 45-60 minute drive. If your kind of trip is exploring a city on foot, stopping at a cafe in every lane and soaking up the heritage side of Kyiv rather than the new malls, the Podil location is the right call.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to help you decide — the first thing to weigh is room size, because this is a restoration that respects the old structure, so most rooms are not as spacious as a new-build 4-star. Some may feel compact if you travel with big luggage or expect a lot of sitting-room space. Second, there is no spa, full gym or pool, since the focus is boutique design, atmosphere and art over a complete set of facilities — anyone set on using a spa or pool every day should pick a big chain in Pechersk or the city centre instead. Third, the style is not for everyone: the bare-concrete minimalism, dim light and industrial tone can read as too cold for someone who loves classic luxury with feathers, gold and crystal, so if the picture in your head is a "classic European luxury hotel," adjust expectations. Lastly, Podil can get lively on weekends from the surrounding bars and cafes, and street-facing rooms may catch some noise — ask for a room facing the interior courtyard and it is much quieter.

If the trip in your head is wandering Podil's lanes, dropping into indie cafes, catching an art show, climbing Andriyivsky Descent, then coming back to sip wine on the rooftop to the sound of vinyl in a tasteful bar, this is about as well-matched as it gets — and great value for the design and location you get. But if you are coming to Kyiv for a full resort break with a spa, pool and gym and want big-chain 5-star spacious rooms, it may not be the fit.
