In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Alaya Resort Ubud sits on Jl. Hanoman in the true centre of Ubud — a position almost no other 4-star can match. The resort has 60 units in a contemporary Balinese style, opened in 2011 and renovated several times since. Deluxe rooms run 40–60 sqm, finished with Balinese teak, hand-woven textiles and local paintings, and the bathrooms are roomy with strong showers. The Alaya Suite stretches to 90 sqm with its own private balcony. Most reviews land on the same two points: the rooms are clean and well maintained.
Food and amenities
The infinity pool is on the third floor, looking out over treetops and the tiled roofs around the Monkey Forest. The big draw, though, is the DaLa Spa, which has taken "Best Spa in Ubud" several years running — its standout is the 2-hour Alaya Signature Massage, a mix of Swedish, Balinese and hot-stone work at around $71 a person. The Petani Restaurant (the name means "farmer") cooks Indonesian food using produce from local gardens, and dinner is the meal guests praise most.
Location and getting there
Location is the headline here. The Sacred Monkey Forest is a 5-minute walk, Ubud Palace is 10, the Ubud Art Market is 12, and the morning fresh market is about 8. You barely need a car if you want to explore on foot. From Denpasar (DPS) airport it is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road.
Things to know before booking
This is not a top-tier luxury resort, so the pool is smaller than a dedicated pool villa's. In high season rates climb and the area around the Monkey Forest gets noisy. It is firmly a city-centre stay rather than a secluded retreat — if a large pool or quiet isolation is your priority, this is not the pick.
Our take
Alaya Resort Ubud is for travelers who want to be in the middle of everything and walk Ubud every day without paying full 5-star rates. From $157 a night with a renowned spa and helpful staff, it is the best-value stay in the centre.
