Ha Long Bay, in Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized twice over — first in 1994, then again in 2000 — for its karst limestone geology. More than 2,000 islands push up through turquoise water, surrounded by deep caves, hidden lagoons, and floating fishing villages. An overnight cruise is the best way to experience the bay in a way that no photograph can replicate.
#1 Ha Long Bay Overnight Cruise
The overnight cruise is the centerpiece of any Ha Long Bay visit. A traditional junk carries you out into the bay to watch the sun set and rise surrounded by islands in near-silence. A 2-night, 3-day itinerary gives you time to stop at caves, islands, floating villages, and kayaking spots — without competing for space with the day-trip crowds who flood in and out on a single bus.
- Choose a 4- or 5-star vessel for the best experience — price gaps between boats are significant
- Book well ahead for October–April; that is peak season and berths fill fast
- Check the route before booking: some boats loop the same small area; look for itineraries that reach Bai Tu Long or Lan Ha Bay
#2 Sung Sot Cave
Sung Sot — "Cave of Surprises" — covers more than 12,000 square metres and is the largest and most famous cave in Ha Long Bay. It divides into two chambers; the second is large enough to hold over 1,000 people. French explorers discovered it in 1901 and named it Grotte des Surprises for the scale they did not expect. Formations inside resemble elephants, turtles, and ancient warriors.
- There are roughly 100 steep steps before the cave entrance — wear comfortable shoes
- The coloured lighting inside can feel theatrical, but the rock formations themselves are genuinely impressive
- Arrive before 9:00 a.m. to beat the day-tour rush
#3 Ti Top Island
Ti Top Island is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited alongside Ho Chi Minh in 1962. The island has a curved white-sand beach good for swimming, plus 450 steps climbing to a 110-metre viewpoint with a full 360-degree panorama of the bay — one of the most-photographed spots in Vietnam.
- Head up to the summit in the morning or late afternoon; midday is extremely hot
- Water clarity peaks November to March
- Life vests are available for rent if you are not a confident swimmer
#4 Bai Tu Long Bay
Bai Tu Long Bay sits northeast of the main Ha Long Bay and is protected within Bai Tu Long National Park — over 15,783 hectares established in 2001 and designated an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2017. Cruise traffic here is a fraction of the main bay, the water runs clearer, and the atmosphere feels more untouched. It is the right choice for anyone who wants fewer boats, quieter anchorages, and more open sea.
- Specify a cruise route that passes through Bai Tu Long, not just the main Ha Long zone
- Vung Vieng village inside this bay is quieter than Cua Van in the main bay
- Marine biodiversity is higher here — sea turtles are occasionally spotted in season
#5 Kayaking through caves and lagoons
Kayaking is the best way to reach hidden lagoons and small caves that larger boats cannot enter. Many passages require ducking through a low rock arch, then opening out into a lake ringed by vertical cliff walls — quiet, with almost no other boats. Ba Trai Dao Lagoon in Lan Ha Bay is one of the most popular spots for this.
- Choose a cruise package that includes kayaking — most 4- and 5-star boats include it at no extra charge
- Wear clothes that can get wet, and bring sunscreen or a hat
- Watch the tide: some caves are only passable at low water
#6 Cua Van Floating Village
Cua Van is the most well-known floating fishing village in Ha Long Bay, with around 176 households living on the water inside a limestone valley. Residents make their living from fishing and aquaculture in net cages. Drifting through by wooden rowboat or kayak gives a genuine sense of daily life in the middle of the bay — it is a working community, not a set piece.
- Pick a tour that stops here early in the morning; the atmosphere is better before the midday heat
- Villagers sell fresh fish and seafood — prices are negotiable
- Do not throw anything in the water; this is an active residential community
#7 Cát Bà Island
Cat Ba is the largest of the more than 367 islands in the Cat Ba Archipelago and has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2004. A third of the island is national park, home to 741 animal species and 282 plant species — including the Cat Ba langur, one of the most critically endangered primates on Earth. The town has hotels at every price point and is a practical base for exploring both Lan Ha Bay and the outer edges of Ha Long.
- Staying overnight lets you explore the national park and uncrowded beaches at your own pace
- Renting a scooter to circuit the island is easy — roads are scenic and far less crowded than the coast
- Access to Lan Ha Bay from here is more convenient than from the main Ha Long pier
#8 Lan Ha Bay
Lan Ha Bay borders Ha Long to the south and east of Cat Ba Island, covering more than 7,000 hectares with over 400 islands and islets. The water is clearer than the main bay and visitor numbers are substantially lower, making it the preferred destination for kayakers and snorkelers. CNN listed it among Asia's hidden gems in 2022.
- Well-suited for 1- to 3-day kayak tours departing from Cat Ba Island
- Several beaches in this bay remain undeveloped
- If you have 3 days, a cruise covering all three bays — Ha Long, Bai Tu Long, and Lan Ha — is worth it
